View Full Version : Tunnel Run, 2012

Grumpy

Plans are afoot folks. The issue is timing, because its a busy year all round on the biking front(The Weekender, WDW, MOB and thats just the larger events!)

To this point I am planning to organize a tunnel run on SUNDAY 8TH OF APRIL. That is easter sunday.

As on the last run, which we held late afternoon, we became seperated as a group, because of this I am proposing we hold the run in the morning, say 10am meet to leave at 10.30am.
Last year we managed over 20 bikes, lets see if we can make it more!

Usual meet point, south side of Chelsea Bridge.

Please add your name to the list so we can get an idea of how interested.

Does anyone coming up from south of the Thames fancy having a pre-meet and ride-in from Ryka's Café @ Box Hill, (Dorking, Surrey, RH5 6BY) say for 08:45/09:00 and a 09:15 departure?

Google Maps gives 3* route options using combinations of A24, A3 & 243 between 36-40 mins / 21.6-23.0 miles.

I'm not familiar with the Chelsea Bridge part of London, but surely there has to be safety in numbers...

EDIT I feel pretty confident about getting to South of Chelsea Bridge, i'm more used to approaching via A3 but A24 will be ok.

Well, that would require an early starting time, but it would involve both of the new tunnels, as you'd have go southbound to be able to get back up the northbound tunnel...

Perhaps it would encourage some Members from the southern Sussex/Surrey/Hampshire regions to join in on the Easter fun...

From memory, I think the Liphook services are located just below Hindhead on the A3...

I was joking G? - London is going to be involved enough already without another 30 miles/hour and a bit (legally) to the day. Another time perhaps. Maybe we could do a South of England pier tour one day? Brighton, Bournmouth, Bognor, Worthing, what's not to love? (Tonguefirmlyincheekthistime)

The Merc dealer is on the N side of Albert Bridge. Cross from south to north on Albert, turn right and the next bridge is Chelsea

Alternatively from Sloane Sq -

On the south side of Sloane Sq is Lower Sloane st, that turns into Chelsea Bridge Road which runs straight onto the bridge.

I thought that the single yellow's lifted in central london on a sun even on a bank holiday weekend?

If they don't( god bless the City of Westminster!!) we can head west, Rollo has suggested the greasy spoon on the Kings Rd, which is easy to get to from the last tunnel.

Its not a Greasy spoon
There are a couple of cafe/coffee at the old Duke of York barracks or a bit further down the King Road is Blue Bird

I only do grease spoons!!:chuckle::chuckle:

Between Wardour St, Berwick St, Broadwick St and Noel/Great Marlborough St
there are about 40 M/C only spaces which will be largely empty on a weekend.
last time we all parked around there and piled into Breakfast Club on D'Arblay St. for lunch

I think the thing to do is to see what the final numbers are, then decide where to finish.

There will hopefully be a pre-meet at Box Hill & riding up if you fancy joining an earlier mini-group ride-in. I'm guessing 08:45 for a 09:15 Departure should get us there in time.

With such a large group might be an idea to find a suitable venue to finish with easy parking.
Dont know if it being Easter Sunday will make a difference?

Last time the group got split up pretty early in the ride. How about making a half way stop so every one can catch up before setting off in a group again?

Heading back into central London won't be as fragmented as heading out so we should all end up at the end point around the same time.

Dont know if it being Easter Sunday will make a difference?

We did a run on an another forum, met at 7am, and finished up on Brick Lane for beigels and coffees. Seemed to work well.
But the earlier start/finish worked better. Also the earlier start meant there were a few more shenanigans. Read. multiple burnouts and cheeky wheelies etc

You should probably be aware almost all the tunnels in London are managed from a single ops room, so the controllers must look at these runs slightly bemusedly on CCTV. Anyhow avoid unnecesary shenanigins to avoid being nicked later.

Sadly will not be able to make it. Yesterday discovered that on every pot hole fuse for brake/horn and dash/tail light/indicators blows. Now I found fault and fixed it. Saying that the fuse that blows now on every pot hole is ignition. 5 miles from home so will try to gently limp it. 18y old electrics are collapsing.

Many thanks Grumpy, Slob (particularly for your patience with some of us back markers) and anybody else involved in the organisation of this event. I had a great morning (despite being somewhat lost at times) and it was dood to put some faces to names.

Great way to spend a Sunday morning, nice to meet lots of new people, favourite sound of the day,
probably the old 900, think it was Flattop, the Streetfighter were also nice. Loved the food in the cafe place we went.

Look fwd to seeing everybody soon.

the way we was all reunited as we came out of the kingsway tunnel was a bit special

it was like something out of a film! 10 ducs coming up from the underpass and merging with the other 10 or so on the main road!! Properly great shot for anyone lucky enough to have been walking by at the time... :yoparty::woot:

Sorry I didn't make it.
New belts were fitted and valve clearances checked in readiness, but....
At 5.00am it was still drizzling steadily here in leicester, like it had been for the last 24hrs, so I went back to bed.
It wasn't just the prospect of 250 wet miles, but also the £50 that I would have to spend on petrol for the privelege.
Apologies to Grumpy et al.
See you all at Arrow Mill.

I went through the Hindhead tunnel on Friday, after the Horsham run, does that count as a tunnel run? ;)

Looks like a good turn out for a soggy Sunday morning
