In 2009 there were 3 movies made based on book trilogy.

Girl with dragon tattoo, ... who played with fire and ... that kicked the hornets nest.

All 3 very good but made in Sweden and in Swedish.

So now hollywood has made 1st part of the trilogy, put daniel Craig in it and spent 3 times as much. Will it be any better .... doubt it.

They sunk very low in Hollywood, no more good ideas, very few good new actors all they do is reheat old movies or make new movies with action hero actors of old.

The Expendable's 2 will have chuck norris and segal in it ffs.

I agree there hasn't really been anything amazing lately. But Expendables is good if you just want to switch your brain off and see some explosions and also some of the superhero movies have been good with Batman out next year along with the Avengers.

There is also a movie coming out called Act of Valor as well. In fact there have been some good films like Sherlock Holmes and others but I can't remember at the moment :chuckle:

Oh yeah Steven Segal isn't in it because Van Damme is and they don't like each other lol

You got me looking and I found some MORE sequels coming:

Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol (Out now)
Bad Boys 3
The Bourne Legacy
Fast and Furious 6
A good day to die hard (die hard)

Some of them I'm actually looking forward to

(Sorry for 3 posts, I should have just edited!)

rac3r ok there we ok movies from Hollywood but no wow factor for years now.

New Startrek was last wow for me I can remember.

New Holmes is funny but well not great, 1st Expendable's was good as it was new idea off all action heroes in one but 2nd movie?
I prefer A team over expendables but A team did not make predicted profits so no seconds.

I like superhero movies but they ruin every 2nd one. Batman begins & onwards good, hulk crap, x-men good, superman crap, iron man good, daredevil crap, captain America good, fantastic 4 crap, Spiderman good, cat woman crap, ghost rider crap so a falls on avengers as good.

Immortals was bad but what saved it (mind you only if you watched it in 3D) is strategically placed pair of lovely boobies in 3D, sweet. Better then remade Pocahontas also known as Avatar.

Operation Valkyrie with Cruise was a joke and as inaccurate as you can get just as bad as Defiance with Craig.

Doctor who is coming maybe?
Chronicle?
MI3 will be crap

Why they are already remaking Spiderman? The Amazing Spiderman is Spiderman 1.
Battleship might be good.
Contagion was very good.
Rock of Ages looks very promising.

They make so many movies and one can only point few good one's WTF is world going dumber?

MIB 3 is coming but that looks fun.

Bourne Legacy was obvious it is based on books.

F & F 6 why they already got them all together in previous one?

If you see the end of the last F&F you will see why there is another. I actually liked the last F&F as they have moved from street racing to a more heist type film like the Italian Job.

Have you seen the cast list for Expendables 2? There is pretty much every action hero there has ever been!

Sorry F&F was boring so must have missed the ending, nitrous converting cars in to Startrek warp capable vehicles :)

I know re Expendables 2 but still it was done already.

Got to say that Drive and Source Code were well worth the money.
There are a lot of smaller budget films this year which are left field, not action movies such as Tree of life.
One of my favourites this year was closer to the Edge....brilliant.

Agree about the blockbusters, but really, that's been Hollywood for as long as I can remember. The occasional bit of brilliance and the rest being big budget special effect movies, lots of explosions and short on story line and acting.

It's funny how the original GWTDT films don't get a mention in the tv interviews. The same with the Swedish Film let the right one in. Great film if you haven't seen it.

Hollywood has been taking "foreign" stories and remaking them for a looong time...wasn't the Magnificent Seven a remake of Seven Samurai, and "The Ring" was originally a Japanese horror flick, I don't think it's a bad thing...as "foriegn" movies get very little exposure in Europe/US...might get people interested in the original versions too....my favourite this year was a remake...Tinker, Tailor, Soldier,Spy.

Why not write your own screenplay?
How about "The Girl With The Worthless SAAB Warranty"

Starring,
Jo Brand as The Girl
Rowan Atkinson as The Swedish Prime Minister
Matt Lucas and David Walliams as Crown Prince Smeg and Princess Ryvita
Skippy as The Rich Australian Potential Buyer
Ulrika Johnsonn as Herself
Colin Firth as Oskar Vinner
and
Boy George as The Fat Poof

It might work?

Documentaries aside as those are very specific movies. Source code was ok but better was the one with the pill that makes people super smart, what was it?

Also they make quite a few good movies a year it is just that mostly good equals low earnings as one needs to think, exception is special effects feast like Rise of the Apes.

Q:
Has there ever been a remake that was better than the original?
A:
NO

So what is the point of churning them out, just a waste of time.

Disagree there is one, new Batman series better then old. Nothing against burtons vision of original but it did not work. Such a dark movie and then trying to put positive joke spin it never worked. Instead he created crappy cartoon.

New one is dark, is scary, is fast and has a hint of hope only.

Many good foreign movies but they get lost amongst Hollywood advertising budget. Dear god if they have subtitles.
Even in Hollywood they notice some movies get lost amongst crap with huge advertising budget so they think on feet. Best ever movie build up by add was cloverfield. A year before 5s clips getting longer closer to movie but until month before release no title was given.

Same people did chronicle.

From the trailer of 'The Thing', it looks like it might be a decent film with a load of special effects. I never saw the original, so wouldn't be able to compare. I'm sure someone will have an opinion though...

It's usually difficult to improve on a cult or classic film, apart from adding modern special effects or modern film making techniques. It is a shame that imagination seems to be lost within the corridors of Hollywood. It's an uphill battle from the start, coz there is already a perception of what it should be like. I think ultimately it depends if the film/screenplay was made from a book, or whether it was written directly for cinema release - and subsequently a book was made from the film/screenplay. Those written originally from a book have more scope for a better re-make, as perhaps not all of the book contents was chosen to go into the original film - take 'Lord of the Rings' for example was originally released in 1978 - A Box Office trilogy epic was later born which won numerous accolades & awards. Books lend the mind to imagination and Directors & Producers can explore this, as technology has allowed new frontiers of film making to become reality.

But then again is it a generation thing? I'm sure there will be many 'Three Musketeers' & 'Robin Hood' films down the line. They aren't made to compete with previous versions, more to put a different artistic impression based around what's modern technology at the time.

Films like the Expendables (2) are just switch off brain, and enjoy. Have no expectation, and throw all the action heroes past & present together, combine it with as many gun fights, explosions & special effects that you can. Besides Arny isn't Governor anymore, so he won't have an acting clause preventing him for doing his bit & not just a cameo role... Anyone expecting the best acting really went to the wrong film.

Ultimately, films are a form of art - everyone has a different expectation, taste or desire in what they want to see. The same goes for Directors & Producers, both will have an idea of how they can make something either better or different.

We all like different things - The world would be a much sadder place if this wasn't the case.

What's even funnier well sad, is when you hear youngsters saying did you see such and such?? You then say yep but the original was better.
Blank faces abound .. You mean there was a film before this one????
Yup!! and then il shuffle away on my Zimmer!

One of my fav films ever is Manhunter ..
Was then churned out as Red Dragon ( books name)
Brian Cox a far better Hannibal and the film sets and music awesome!!
The guy who played Francais Dollerhyde wow he is one big scary dude!!!

That's a film to watch and compare to it's remake.

Have I ever seen a better remake then an original??
No ..

The one I'm dreading a remake of is Cell 211 - a Spanish prison drama which I saw on a plane recently. Excellent film, but given the looks of the Spanish actor playing one of the main 2 characters, I have a dreadful feeling that the Hollywood remake that is on the cards will use the ghastly Colin Farrell ...

I liked Cloverfiled it was from day 1 a Godzilla feel movie but then I always like original Godzilla.

Thing with Cloverfiled is how much pressure, how much I want to see this what ever it is they built up. It could have been the biggest **** in the world (luckilly it was not that bad) it would still make budget and good money just because of the hype.

Look at this Vampire/Werwolf movie that teens go to see. The latest one got a score of 4.1 and made hell lot of money. It is unwatchable and deffinetly expendable ;)

The 2003 Italian Job was a decent remake. As good as the original was with Michael Caine, what made it for me was that they didn't try to use the same story line - or even the famous phrase. Only the first 10-15mins or so was the original theft of gold - the bulk of the film was stealing it back. The use of the new mini was also a nice tie in to the original, along with a cameo role in between thefts of the classic mini.

Mind you I am a bit bias, Charlize Theron was the icing on the cake

I've never seen a good sequel .

Well, Star Wars episode V: aka 'The Empire Strikes Back', is apparently the favoured movie by die hard Star Wars fans, of the two trilogys. More dark 'n'all. So this was the first sequel in the saga.

Depends which vampire series you look at He11cat, the 'Underworld' saga doesn't have such 'lame' vampires or werewolves imho. And most of the films in the series are blessed with Kate Beckinsale dressed in a black skin tight latex outfit. The trailer for ‘Underworld 4: New Dawn’ looked pretty tasty :p

Moon was ok, sorry but Source code for me was so so predictable. Especially 30 min in. Especially that it seemed like I seen it somewhere before, just can not place which movie. A bit like Dejavu, bit like hedgehog day and a bit like something else.
