I'm looking to change the oil and filter

I thinking an OEM filter would be my best bet, but where's the best place to buy one from?

I have been told 15w50 fully synthetic oil is what I want but what is the best oil to use?

I'm based in Birmingham and would prefer to buy from a shop but may be tempted to buy on-line if it will save a lot of money.

Thanks
Ben

Fully synthetic all the way W50 sounds a bit much but it is air-cooled, mind so that might be about right. K&N oil filter on my R1 seems to work. I think them boys know a bit about filters. They're not much more than an OEM jobbie.

Defo fully synthetic, I use 10w40 in mine, (the same in my S4), Motul 7100 works well for me but any decent synthetic motorcycle specific 10w40 will be ok (depends how much you want to spend!). As to the filter, yer pays yer money, Hiflo are the common make these days, used them before without any probs, the advantage with the K&N variety is that they have a 13mm nut welded to the bottom of the filter, so removing it when it's due it's next change is a doddle as you don't need a special filter remover

special filter remover

Oh yes, I've now found an alternative use for my screwdriver and hammer :chuckle:

I like K&N filters because they have a nut on the bottom that makes them easier to remove. As for oil, everyone has their preference but I like Motul 300v 15/50 - it looks like extra virgin olive oil... ;)

The cheaper oil filters sold on Ebay are crap, Iv,e had them with the threads not cut properly , which means you dont know how tight the fit is onto the rubber seal ring. I only use K&N now , couple of quid more, but good quality.

I use Hiflo filters and Mobil 1 15W50 fully synth oil. Bike seems to like both. Change these around 1500-2000 miles. Anyone used Shell Helix, found a good deal on evil bay.

Thanks guys,

by the way are you using bike specific oil or is car oil compatible?

I think the bike has Silkolene comp 4 15w50 in at the moment, it was red when the oil was changed by a shop. Does anybody use comp4?

changing every 1500-2000 miles is a bit excessive

Should be good for around double that depending on year/model you have

I use a 10-40W semi synthetic,

I tried fully, mine just drank it, on semi synth not a problem. Wouldn't go too thin as the motor wasn't designed for it and time+miles wont have tightened the tolerances.
