View Full Version : Continued Clutch Grabbing

Heya guys,

So, throughout this year I've felt the clutch begin to grab when moving off at low speed. Took at look at it in January and gave the plates a polish on Ducati John's lathe, and the friction plates seem to have plenty on there...

That stopped it for a few weeks but it began doing it again, and again gave the plates a clean and noticed the basket was showing signs of wear.... general gear changes are fine, just the grabbing when moving off...

It's started doing it again this week and I'm starting to get concerned that i have a number of track days booked this year, whilst at the same time my financial situation isn't great with recent costs so trying to avoid shelling out unnecessary costs...

Is there anything else it could be apart from a possible new clutch basket being needed? I'll try and post up some pictures of the basket later this week....

Check your slave cylinder for a leak, had a similiar problem on mine - brembo slaves are notorious for this. Just recently swapped it out for an oberon - much better and a lighter action.

Already have an oberon fitted, last year... doesn't seem to be any leak but could it possibly need bleeding at all (Clutching at straws here), the bite point feel fine...

I have a "94" m600 with the same problem, it only happens when you pull alway first thing then disapppears completely, sorry I cant add any advise, apart from my clutch looks in fair condition but the action is quite hard. I'll be watching this one with great interest, good luck

Jim, It may be worth trying a set of new springs? They are cheap and may have got hot and weakened a bit. Also check the present ones haven't come loose on the M6 allen heads. The pulling away asks more of your clutch than any other time, so this is where it will show first. Next it will be under (all that awesome S4RS power!) under acceleration.
The only other suggestion would be to 'dress' the clutch basket with a file where the clutch plates touch on the outsides. Good luck.

Jim,

Is the dry clutch on the S4RS the slipper type?

If so it might be worth looking at the mechanism to check for crud build up or excessive wear

Not a slipper no, and new springs were put in just last year...

Couple of pictures, focus point messed up but think you get the idea... is this a knackered basket or just well worn?

Is very much on his way out TBH mate, the problem is that it will start to eat onto your plares too. Have they got a 2nd hand one to see you through this year at DucMan? If not I'm sure got one knocking about.

Strip, clean and check stack height. Adjust if necessary with plain plates and ensure dish/spring plate is on the correct way round

Try filing the burrs off and it will improve the action along with the rattle noise!

Bloody`ell Jim, that is near unsalvageable IMO mate.

If you do dress the burrs off, you'll just be increasing the distance between the plates and the basket, which will probably speed up the wear even more.
Sorry, new basket mate i'm thinking!

If you file that off it will only wear your plates even more, and then you'll have buy a basket and the plates too.I know you like your noise Rally bit you need to know when to stop ;)

was about to say it doesn't look that bad like , perhaps it is,

like replacing chain and sprockets, its worth replacing both at the same time less you nack just new plates no ~:?

with regards to riding with a worn clutch as you've noticed its a bit nasty setting off especially at lights where you have an immediate turn to make

just be prepared to stall the motor if you cant disengage the clutch at some point :dizzy:

That drum is fooked

A lot more expensive but it could be worth shelling out this....

The Barnett drum has stainless steel inserts to prevent premature wear on the slots. MPL used to do a cheaper one with titanium inserts but it sadly went out of production several years ago :(

May actually save you money in the long run & clutch operation should stay more consistent too.

Jim have a look at Avanti Race Parts www.avantiraceparts.co.uk in the technical section it may shed some light on your problem or just give them a call.

I would try measuring the friction plates, i did mine last week and i think there all on the 2.8mm limit or a fraction below.
Mine also grabs when pulling away sometimes.
