M600 engine how do i tell which one?

There is an M600 engine in my 600SS mini twin race bike how do I tell which one it is, I am trying to work out gearing. The bike came with a 38, 42, 43 and 44 so i wold guess at a mid years engine. But I don't understand why it has a 38 as I am guessing I would need two chains a ling one and a shorter one.

It is Matt Trainors Class B winning bike 2008 if that helps.

Does it go by VIN number?
