Looking around at some of the bikes for sale there are a few I like but they have around 20k miles on the clock. What sort of mileage do these engines go for? as in when I'm likely to have to start replacing things or having problems?

I've done 18,000 on mine, still very happy with it. I read somewhere on here that they run better with a few miles on the clock, I agree with that.

its not so much the mileage on the engine as the cosmetic effect on the rest of the bike, 40 k miles makes for a few stone chips and scratches

Cosmetic isn't too bad because it can be easily sorted. I did a quick google search and there seems to be loads of monster with 100k+ miles with some over 200! Majority of them being the old 900's

I guess the main thing is if it's been looked after and serviced

To a degree, yes. A well looked after higher mileage would be preferable to a poorly looked after low mileage imo.

Scotty has a good point. Stone chips could mount up, as well as the obvious suspension, bearings etc

At the right price though, you could buy an older bike and bling up anything that wears

That's what I was thinking! If I can get one at a lowish price it might be worth it

Two 900ie's here & both regularly serviced

One has done 24K the other nearer 28K - no major problems at all

Done 17.5k in 3 years - everyone I know says its better to run them that not - the S4RS Engine is a detuned SBK engine and so should be good for a fair old whack of miles I say.

my S4 is up to 10,000 and like new (for sale if your interested), my old ST2 was at 35,000 when I sold it and still going strong.

Its not just the miles but the way they are ridden. How do you tell if the miles covered were at full throttle and high revs or gently bimbled. Ducati engines take a good 6k before they get settled in and used right can stay happy for 40 or 50k before they even need the odd replacement part. My thoughts would be the rest of the bike will starts to be unsafe long before the engine gives up.

I'd have to dig the old KM clocks out of the garage for an accurate guess, but I'm sure my old '93 Monster is kicking around 65-70,000 miles, and has only had the cylinder head studs replaced. She gets her regular service, and still runs well.

As with all cars & bikes, a well maintained engine will last for ages! (whilsts I'm typing this I'm just taking a break from servicing the Jag, 127k and still running smoothly!)
