I have always suffered with cold hands (but a warm heart - my wife sez) when riding, even in summer, winter is an absolute nightmare - even with heated grips! - thumbs are the worst coz they're pointing in the airflow. So I invested (all of £12 from fleabay - cheapskate!) in some motocross type hand/brush guards - WOW what an improvement, although they don't make my hands any warmer, they stop the windchill factor and hence make them less cold - if that makes sense??http://Photo0005.jpghttp://Photo0006.jpghttp://Photo0007.jpg
It looks a bit 'lop eared' from the front now, but I'm nice and toasty at 5.30 am on the way to work and that's more important to me.

Yep, it stands to reason that the wind chill is the major factor in cold hands. Heated grips are fighting a losing battle if they're left out in the wind.
I made a custom set of handguards for my bike a couple of years ago, which are QD and can be fitted/removed in two minutes, which helps avoid their ugliness as soon as the weather warms up.
A secondary advantage is that it enables me to wear much thinner gloves, so there's much more 'feel' to the controls.
I'd post a pic, but I don't have a digi camera and my computer skills are crap.
