cleaning burnt on oil

Have found a small oil leak that has been left to worsen and has resulted in a patch of burnt oli on the engine casings

is there any way to clean this without stipping the paint work off in the process?

Try neat Fairy Liquid and a non scratch scouring pad. Sounds dart but washing-up liquid is a bloody good detergent. If things get really hairy, use some T-Cut.

BBQ lighter fluid softens it up nicely too. Then the usual Auto Glym polish will shift it with ease.
