View Full Version : New Michelin Pilot Road 3 sounds like a Winner !

I saw that Michelin were bringing a new Pilot tyre out this year with a bit of new technology and better 'wet' weather grip, the PILOT ROAD 3, and I saw in this month's (April) BIKE magazine that they give it a review.

New tread for better water dispersion plus the same 2 compound technology on the Pilot Road 2 tyre. The tyre was tested against all the other leading Sports Touring tyres for wet weather comparison.

To Quote the tyre tester;
" The best yet, by miles. More confidence and outright grip. I could confidently drag my knee through inch-deep puddles every lap. The GSX1250 is a 257 kg bike and these are road tyres ! It was alarming at first, as I've only found this level of wet weather grip before with race wets and without the movement you get from the blocks on a racing wet. These are the best road tyres I've used in the wet. They tick every box.'

I'll be placing my order before my long tour in the summer for the Multistrada, my S4R gets shod with stickier shoes... :)

These seem to be exactly the kind of tyre that I've been waiting for.
At last, a sensible tyre for real road conditions.
And they have the dual compound rubber too, which seems to give a much longer useful life by retaining the profile for longer.
I shall definitely be fitting a set, when the pilot road 2s that I currently have are finished.
If only they could invent a tyre that dealt with diesel spills too.

I run Michelins on all my bikes, always have done so. I love them to bits; very good on mileage, grip and all round wear. They also give you a great feel for when you are on the limit, rather than just letting go like some others i've tried before. :D

Good job I need new ones on the Trumpet for this Summer then. Thanks J.P.

Technically, Summer should mean long, warm, sunny days. Reality though is another thing and better improved wet grip is always very handy.

I run the pilot road 2, and if they are any indication of the road 3s they should be very good!

Bear in mind that the test in Bike was only a wet weather test. If you ride in the wet a lot it looks like these are the tyres to have (or if you want to ride in the wet exactly how you ride in the dry). It has yet to be seen how they perform in the dry, however I doubt Michelin would have made a tyre that doesn't have dry grip and longevity that is as good or better than the Pilot Road 2.

At the end of the summer once I've used up the Bridgestone 016 that are on my bike, these will go on my shopping list. I loved the Michelin Pilot Road 2 on my Kawasaki ZRX1200R, they gave me so much confidence in what they were doing as well as quickening the steering. So much better than the Bridgestones that I had before.

As Steeevvvooo says they should be good if the Road 2's were anything to go by. I've just put a new set on, the last ones did over 10,000 miles and still had quite a bit of legal life left in them. Alan C had a pair on his Fazer that did an outrageous mileage. Brilliant all round tyre that actually lasts.

Over 10,000 miles on a set of Pilot Road 2 is pretty good. On my Kawasaki I would get a maximum of 8,000 miles out of the rear. It could be to do with it being a heavier bike (223kg dry) and also my love of hard acceleration ;)

I fully expect the Bridgestone 016 on my Monster to be done by the end of the summer, by which time they'll have done over 6,000 miles.

Bloody heck !!
I'll never live up to THOSE tyres.

Btw, JP.....since I have my pedantic hat on today, strictly speaking, weight is proportional, not equal, to momentum. ......cheesey grin.

And it appears he's on a track, so not much carp, manhole covers and white lines to worry about either

He was on track but that's the best place to consistently and safely test the range of tyres they were testing, plus I think they had a hose flooding the tracks so conditions were controlled.

paolo think they charge about £7 a wheel if you take the bike in for fitting and balancing
