A uni mate of mine wants to buy a 1960s Yamaha CD175....

Probably looking for one that is in running condition, but needs a bit of work done.

Dont suppose anyone knows a rough price bracket? He seems to have found prices from a few hundred up to a few thousand, but isnt sure whats reasonable.

Cheers

Wow, i had one exactly like that in 1974, i think mine was a 1967 "E" reg.
I had 18 inch ape-hangers on mine, thrashed it for ages until it broke some piston rings.

I would think a decent example of one of those would be well over a grand, they must be getting pretty thin on the ground these days.

I can well believe it Rob, i did say a decent one would bring over a grand, the one at 4k is much more than decent, still a lot of moolagh for one though, no matter what condition.

Well, I'm chuffed.
My monster is worth about 1% of the price of the NR750.
On most days, in the real world, I'd rather own my bike.
That's a saving of nearly £1/4 million !!!!

That brings some memories back, we used to hotwire my mates brothers old Honda CD175 in the late seventies and take it for a run when their family used to go out on a friday night, and when we got back we used to pour water over the engine so they wouldnt know we had been out on it. We were 15, even got chased by the police once and got away. :spin:

I learnt to ride on my dads CD175 in a cash and carry carpark in 1980

Similar vintage - late 60's model in dark metallic grey. He only paid peanuts for it then, as he only needed a cheap hack for commuting to work. Shocked that a similar spec bike is now selling for £4000!

You think that,s shocking, when your dad was learning to ride his first bike, he was only paying three shillings and sixpence halfpenny a gallon for 5star petrol.

There are at least three types of Honda 175 four stroke twin, the early 'Sloper' ones with an inclined engine hung from a spine frame, then in the mid seventies they went more conventional with the CD175 [Four speed single carb] or "sportier" CB175 with twin carbs and five speed box. The CD kept going till the 80's, but the CB175 morphed into the CB200. The CB200s were quite popular with learners as they were nearly as fast [Slow?]as a 250 but cost £100 less. They became unsaleable when the learners were restricted to 125s though.

A different style, but you can still pick up CB200s for a few hundreds of squid - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1978-HONDA-CB200-GREEN-MOTORBIKE-ALL-ORIGINAL-bargain-/170596777253?pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item27b85c3d25

If wanting a Yamaha, the fun 175 from the 70's was the DT175 twinshock, that two stroke single trailie is getting dearer again now though.

Quite possibly

Almost as shocking as the £1-30 a gallon I used to pay to fill up my moped in 1981

I learnt on a CB200, there were a lot of CD175s around at that time. They were almost always owned by commuters who regarded them solely as a means of transport, with no interest in biking. Quite an upturn in popularity now though!

In 1976, i bought a two year old Honda C90 off a lad at work,`cos they were brill..and still are.
Every Thursday (payday) on my way home from work, i would fill the tank to brimmimg....50p.
That got me to work and back for another week.

You want shocking, my grandfather paid £350 for a Vincent Black Shadow circa 1953, 20 yrs later it became mine, I had no clue what to do with it and did not even like it that much, I sold/swapped it around 1974 for some cash and a whole load of car spares all in I guess about £500, last week I saw one for sale, it wasn't pristeen but it looked OK the price...........£52,000 I'm still crying.

I gave one away 3 years ago... it was crap.
Souless and rust like mad.
It got through an MOT .
In the top 3 worst bike I ever owned, Id rather ride my smashed up slower CG !

Then the bloke who had it had the nerve to ask if I wanted to buy it off him now it had an MOT!!!
Why he hated it as much as I did :)

If he'd offered me £400 to have it back I would have said no thanks!! dreadful thing it was.
Up there with the krapkasaki I owned ..
It used to be the Honda dealers delivery bike even they got shot as it was so grim lol!!

OUCH I feel for you Kato!
But if you don't like something you don't like it so whats the point in keeping it .... you did what was human nature.. :)

Having said that they are stunning bikes...

My uncle let my Grandads Matchless rot in the garden and chopped it .... I had to watch it get worse and worse every year until it was a basket case ... that hurt!

Later CB Hondas I liked..
If I brought another classic Jap id plump for Suzuki's...can't knock them .

Hey Rob, a couple of mates have Vinnies, they don't use them very often, aparrently they are a nightmare to keep running good, plus they both have oil leaks that they just can't stop.
They aren't as bad as this one i spotted on Douglas prom last July at the TT.

14818

I bought a Velocette Venom 500 off my girlfriends uncle in 1973 for £25.
The clutch was slipping, so i stuck it in a corner of the garage, i was re-building a Triumph TR6 saint at the time, so i didn't have time to mess with the Velo.
Nine months later, a mate offered me £75 for it, so i let him have it.
He got it sorted and i used to see him on it quite a bit over the following couple of years.
Last year, i went up to Rossendale, Lancs for their bike show...yup, there was the Velo, in mint condition and he still uses it often, plus he's done very little work on it, other than a rebore and new piston, plus new valves and seats in the head and a new kickstart ratchet.

I think he got a good deal.
