Has anybody gone against the norm and is using Cafe racer style bars?

How are they?

Comfy?

Do they mess up the handling?

As in Clip ons???
If so they are popular ..
I have some in a box here and am umming about them ...
My other bike has clip ons and an extreme ride position but I like it ...
You kind of adapt to the ride I find.

Do you mean 'ace' bars or 'jota' bars?
The sort of thing that gives a dropped bar look without actually fitting clip ons, I tried Jota bars but the bar clamps on my S2R were too big for them and I opted for clip ons instead.

(I think you can get them for the SR bikes from Suburban Machinery in the US.)

I doubt they'll make any difference to the handling other than to put a bit more of your weight forward.

Yes, an Ace Cafe Racer sort of position.

Bar change without the expense of clip ons.

I had clip ons with no rise in them mounted below the top yoke....Painful and uncomfortable

I switched back to normal and loved it even more! Oddly enough the position on the ZX6 is pretty comfortable

On the same page here, I take it that you are also watching the cafe racer program on Sky.

Loved the look of this one.

Cheapest option is to flip your bars - unless they are very high, like city bars.
Second option Suburban Machinery (24 vs 18 degrees sweep back angle)(18 is S*R stock bars)
Third option - clip ons. From very low no-rise to stock height SpeedyMoto TallBoys. WoodCraft has risers in all heights, all of which are lower than stock.

The original donors of the frames for Monsters were the 8 series, the race bikes were always and still are set up with much more weight on the front wheel. Even the bog standard monsters have a slightly higher front loading than an equivalent jap bike.
Anyone with this kind of set up feel like they are close to needing a steering damper?? Might be because the extra front end weight accentuates the little waggle monsters can have in bends sometimes. It seems some cross bracing was removed between the top rails to fit the air box in so the frames on monsters flexes slightly more than designed to.

I find the low clip on's I have to be really comfortable. Guess I'm just used to the sportbike riding position, for all that I have low set bars the fact the seat is also low and the tank doesn't rise sharply at the back means the position is not that radical compared with some of my other bikes.
If your experimenting on a budget then perhaps try the jota bars as these are adjustable.

Which ones have you got Dave ?

Harris, the so called hi rise ones, the rise is about the width of the bar itself- if you mean the clip ons.
A sportclassic 1000S , NC35 and NC30 racebike if you mean bikes.

I have some rizoma clip ons on mine, they're good even at sedated pace. If you go for clip ons some of the early SS are a straight swap, or if you can find some around in-between years SS ( I think mine were off a 2000) are nice, aluminum fittings. You will have issues with cabling/hoses etc, so you might want to consider start looking for upgraded masters and longer hoses (again SS are a good one) also you'll have to reduce steering angle.
To give you an idea this are the SS (the hard to find variety)
http://i703.photobucket.com/albums/ww40/pomp_one/DSC00070.jpg
and this are the Rizoma (even harder to find ones..) all CNC, even the tubes
http://i703.photobucket.com/albums/ww40/pomp_one/various/DSC00149.jpg
they can be only fitted above the yokes thought.
Re ace bars monstachiky had some on hers, thought they're not my cup of tea if not hidden behind a screen..info here (http://www.ukmonster.co.uk/monster/showthread.php?p=297649#poststop)

Does flipping the original bars work? Anyone got any pictures?

Also, anyone know what kind of helmet this guy has got in Vinces first video? Is that one of those clipon jet fighter masks that come with some helmets or simply a scarf? lol:spin:

Still available from Moto-wheels in the USA but remember you'll probably get stung for import duty on top of the list price

I split the difference and went for flat bars with a 4" pull back, if I were to do it again I would go for a little more pull, maybe 6" as I found these ones a little sore on the wrists on longer rides :-)
