Which fuel tank fits my 2000 M750 ?

I'm looking for a tank for my 2000 M750 (carbs).
My information is that all pre '98 carbed monsters had a 18 litre tank, while '98 and later carb models had a 16.5 litre tank. Presumably my original tank is 16.5 litres then.
Does anyone know if the tanks were standard across all models/engine sizes, ie will a tank from a carby 600 for example, fit my 750 ?
Do I have to stick with the 16.5 litre size on my 2000 model or will the earlier 18 litre tank fit straight on with no mismatch at the seat or other problems ?
Is there any way of telling the two sizes of tank apart, without measuring the capacity ?

A way of telling is to measure the where the seat goes against the tank. So if you buy an pre 98 tank you would have to replace the seat. I went the other way round fitting a post 98 tank to mine and there was a large gap so I replaced the seat as well.
