I am fitting an oil cooler to an older monster 750 that doeas not have one , but it needs the spring relief valve under the oil FILTER fitted

any one know which way round to fit the spring plate fits?Huh?

I know the rubber part that goes over one of the oil way holes, and the the other tab end has a bend and fits against the ridge on the crankcase , but it seems too large and I am not sure which way round the bend ?springy bit shoild be.

some people have also stated that its not really needed as its only a relief valve if the oil cooler gets blocked

This is how it is fitted viewed from the oil filter end, as you tighten the nipple it straightens out. And indeed I can't think of how an oil cooler can get blocked.

By the rightside of the front of the engine below the belt cover there'll either be two blanking bolts or two oil lines coming out.

If your engine has oil lines coming out to an oil cooler you need the valve to divert oil up the lines to the cooler, without the plate the oil wil not flow around the cooler, well, only a little.

If you are removing the cooler then, yes, you need to remove the plate.

The plate diverts the flow around the oil cooler by blocking off the passage.

The pictures show you the flow.

The plate blocks the hole and diverts the flow round the cooler, if you remove the cooler and leave the plate, you've restricted the oil flow, not a good idea.
