A friend of mine has a Monster with a tail chop - she's just added some hi-level Termis and has dicsovered the wheelbarrow effect

Is there a way (not involving welding) to re-extend the tail to the length it once was or at least long enough to match the exhaust outputs

I've heard of people chopping the exhausts before to shorten them.... might be easier:scratch::scratch:

I've suggested that and she doesn't fancy that option - not easy this one me thinks...

its relatively easy, takes a bit of time if you've got the cut off part....

Thanks - yes I remember your post - great stuff. 2 small issues...no.1 she hasn't got the piece cut off and no.2 she's not at all hands-on.

She's just sent me this photo - looks orrible....

when i tail chopped my 600, i bought small link pipes and dropped the cans to low level, looked fine, i prefered them low to the high ones i had originally, all is not lost and your friend will end with a better looking bike!

Trouble is she has the lower cans with the tail chop when she got the bike - she just fancied the hi-levels but didn't think about the wheel barrow effect before buying them.

This is what she had before (which personally I prefer) :

i know which one i'd rather have!

Yep with you on that one - but what's the solution for my friend if she wants to keep the hi-level cans and doesn't want to cut them??

I'm in a similar situation with high pipes and would like to do what you've done uksurfer, where did you get your special link pipes from?! Did you also have to modify your passenger pegs?

sorry about the hi-jack LVC, link pipes from 'Carbon can company' about £60, then two small brackets bolted too passenger footpegs to lengthen the exhaust hanger about 2".

(the high level link pipes and carbon exhaust shields fetched about £180 on ebay too)

No probs on the hijack - all good stuff :mand:

I've sent her your photos of the before and after hi-levels and suggested that it looks better with low-level cans - as she has the originals low-levels she can probably re-use the link pipes and hanger with her new hi-level Termis

The trouble with H/L Termi's is the link pipes & cans are very long, which make the wheelbarrow effect even more noticable after the chop. I've seen DIY shortened termi's which work much better with a chopped tail, but you end up with a very short and loud can.

I opted for Sil's on my 900 which are short and tuck in more on chopped tails. But the 620's original low levels do look good with minimal outlay. I would personally sell the Termi's and buy something else that works better.

I agree with Gary... or just shorten the termi link-pipes/get some shorter link pipes made up for the termis?

Don't put the tail back on for god's sake!

What year and model is the Monster in question, someone on here will have the missing part knocking about,
I even saw one on eBay once!

Stop mucking about and get them cans cut down. Short = loud. They look good too.

I think littlejimmy has a bit of frame left over from his tail chop. If you can persuade him to sell. Match it up, insert a piece of tube in the ends to act as stays and glue it in place with some automotive bond. Joints wont be visable as they are covered by tea tray, and bobs you uncle. I'd lower the cans though, much nicer looking!

Even welding on the original piece is not going to stop the wheel barrow effect.

They stick out humongously, are they S4 pipes?

If cutting the pipes down is not on the cards, how about shortening the link pipes?

hey dark duke, how did you mount your indicators with the high levels, I'm looking to mount mines somewhere on my 600 because the original setup fouls the exhausts. Does anyone have a newer tea tray spare from an m620, s4r ect. that I could maybe buy? Thanks

They're about £15 new from Ducati Emmett

I've got two spare frame ends from my previous chops. They may work for re-weld option, and both are for later style tea tray. Free to a good home for cost of P&P

Thanks chaps for the helpful advice and thanks Gary for your kind offer - I'll have a chat with my friend (when she's back from the MotoGP) and see what she wants to do :mand:

Interesting to note where her exhaust cans actually start - they're quite far back virtually level with the rear seat cowl >>>

Whereas yours mholc123 start much further forward >>

I did a mock up of what her's would look like trimmed - they look very stubbie/short IMHO >>

I've just noticed that that's a 600 not a 620 - so my frame left overs won't work

Yes Mate her link pipes are quite long and her main pipes will look a bit short, however if she can't shorten the link pipes I would def shorten the main pipes. My main pipes are from a jap 4 (not sure what one) and were way to long, but am now very pleased with the result.

I've still got the section of end frame & plastic mudguard (no plate light though) from when I chopped my 97 m900 if you need it.

As Crust says, it will still look sh!te (ok, so he didn't say that, but I imagine that was in the inference...)

Personally I just cut the link pipes down, or even simpler, flog the Termis to some label-junky and buy some cans Like GT has on his 900?
