Wroughton, not far from me then, definately have to meet up for some ride outs , was out and about briefly just before Xmas, a tad chilly mind.

Both booked in and wrist bands pre-purchased.

We were just saying that 6000+ (approx number when I booked just now) bikes at Leigh Delamere is going to cause mayhem. And there is still two weeks for people to book in!!

The flyer talks about 1000 bikes riding through Wootten Bassett, hmmm, 6000+ could bring the town to a standstill for quite a while if our experience of RTTW is anything to go by.

Blimey!!!
Just looked at the web site & the numbers are getting huge!!
Nearly 7000 bikes & 10,000 pillions registered with a fortnight to go before registration closes.
If the weather is good, they are going to have big problems with such big numbers.

Has anyone looked at the Afghan Heroes site today?
10,000+ bikes registered and they've temporarily suspended registration because of the overwheming response!!

They can't possibly accomodate that many at Leigh Delamare! This could be very interesting, especially if we all need the loo and a cuppa.

LouSCannon
09-02-2010, 07:17 AM
Excellent, should be a laugh!

I'm sure if it rains they'll get a lot less turning up!

No doubt the popularity is from Wootton Bassett being in te news recentley, and people are keen to show their support.

09-02-2010, 08:48 PM
I could be wrong but as per Daffy Ducs post
'Registrations have been temporarily suspended due to overwhelming support'
so if your not registered by now, you might not be able to :(
the organisers are working hard with police and army etc according to there facebook page, maybe the start/finish point could be moving....

The site today says the ride will not be going on any stretch of the motorway! I wonder if they've moved the meet point to Buckley Barracks (was RAF Hullavington) and we'll ride cross country.

How will they check on the day that the 10,000 riders have registered? one man and a clip board? I can just smell the local cadet forces being pinged for Sunday duty.

I've got nifty work to do that day. Get up at 0300hrs Pick Daughter up from Gatwick, flight due in 0530, hope it's not delayed. back in car by 0630, back home 0930 (possible strobe effect with average speed cameras on M3), change, on bike - to meeting point.

Not sure how many of you are following the updates, seems they've got too many people for the site to manage (No surprise there)...

The ride still has full support however, just plans may change a bit: http://www.facebook.com/afghanheroes/posts/331794991557

If you guys are meeting up I'd like to come down pretty early and meet up somewhere, maybe along one of the other motorway routes?

LouSCannon
12-02-2010, 07:31 AM
Doh!

Why can’t we use RAF Lyneham?
Originally when the organisers approached the MOD the maximum anticipated number of bikes was 2000. As RAF Lyneham is an operational airbase, 10,000+ bikes on-site is impossible.

I'm out - they've limited it to the first 10,000. I registered at around 6,000, Mel got a number I didn't. Left it a few days then registered again and I'm around 10300.
Oh well, I have to be at Gatwick at 0600 hrs so perhaps I'll be too exhausted anyway.

An announcement… and at last it’s great news!

All the agencies (Police, MOD & Local Authorities) have come together to make the Mother’s day ride through Wootton Bassett possible.

The ride will now start within the Hullavington Airfield nr Buckley army barracks (A429) and all of the 10331 registered riders will pass through Wootton Bassett before dispersing. All registered riders will soon receive (by email) full instructions/documentation of the route, arrival / leaving times, a proof of registration and the method by which we are going to get this many riders through a small Wiltshire village safely and without causing total gridlock.

We absolutely understand how difficult it must be for those that missed registration however must ask non-registered riders NOT TO ATTEND; As this poses a major threat to fellow bikers who would be at very high risk if left stationary on the M4 motorway as a result of any of the local junctions becoming blocked.

We must stress that ONLY REGISTERED RIDERS will be able to go on the organised ride.

Oooer! What worries me, looking at the route, is that it is all back roads and will be very slow and probably full of potholes! Also, where it brings you out, at the bottom of the High Street is a very steep hill! Are they going to close the High Street and make it one-way, because if not, it could be a real problem for 2000 bikes at a time! I think I will go last, only 10 miles to get home anyway!!!

I think I might give this one a miss, I registered for the original ride when it was at sensible numbers & meeting at Leigh Delamere.
I have been following developments since they realised that they will be swamped with bikes & started to have second thoughts about the route.
I think it will be at best a very slow crawl on crappy roads with lots of start / stop riding which will possibly overheat the engine or cook the clutch.
Shame really as it's for a very good cause.

Liz,
Let me know if you want me to bring some bacon or rolls over. I have to go by Morrisons on the way to you anyway. I also nicked some HP sauce sachets from Moto services this week on the M4!
Looking forward to it.

I was a bit saddened by the negative publicity it got today on the local radio though, people against it and trying to stop it as they don't think it is right for bikers to support the cause. They then interviewed a biker and he put our side over pretty well. Good on ya mate!

Nobody needs to bring anything except themselves and their bikes - I'll provide the food and hopefully Stafford will cook!

Already grateful to Martin who is going to give me a lift cos I'm too wimpy to ride myself! :o

I've only heard positive comments - 10,000+ bikes? We're there to support, not cause trouble. Living locally, I think the people of Wootton Bassett will know that and not object to the ride. They've done enough to support the repatriation ceremonies and I'm sure will support the fact that this will raise a huge amount of money for our 'Afghan Heroes'.

Great to meet a few new faces, and thanks to Liz for the hospitality... hope everyone else gets home safe and had a good day... one of my highlights was the run up to the A419, cracking roads after being stopped for so long!

Really was something special, to be on the receiving end of such patriotism!

Hi Albie, I think Martin had the Corbins seat on - OMG it was so slippery! I got on at one stage and nearly fell off the other side - lucky my feet could just about touch the ground!

Gutsy, I hope you got home ok? We saw you riding out with another group - sorry we all got separated!

Awesome day on the 888. I got caught in a sea of black and chrome and it stuck out like a sore thumb !!

I really wasnt expecting that. I couldnt believe the amount of people (young and old - there were even the contents of a couple of old peoples homes emptied out!) at the side of the roads clapping and cheering with flags and banners on the route in, and the cars coming the other way flashing their lights and sounding their horns ! The high street was great but I enjoyed the ride in much more.

Probably rates in the top 3 biking experiences Ive had over the last 21 years.

I'm the first to moan about the state of this country and I'm not particularly patriotic, but I felt proud to be british yesterday.

Sorry I missed you guys - tried to make it for the butties but had to do the mothers day breakfast in bed thing with the kids !

We were registered but eventually couldn't make it, very disappointed. Have you been on the RTTW? Same sort of thing but with a service at the memorial to stop and gather your thoughts. Another really worthy cause and registration opened at the beginning of March. A group ride up perhaps?

A poem written by my daughter. Relevant kind off. Touched me anyhow.

The Silent Ranks

I wear no uniforms, no blues or army greens.
But I am in the military in the ranks rarely seen.
I have no rank upon my shoulders. salutes I do not give.
But the military world is the place where I live.

I'm not in the chain of command, orders I do not get.
But my husband is the one who does, this I cannot forget.
I'm not the ones who fires the weapon, who puts my life on the line.
But my job is just as tough. I am the one that's left behind.

My husband is a patriot, a brave prideful man
and the call to serve his country, not all can understand.
Behind the lines I see the things needed to keep this country free.
My husband makes the sacrifice, but so do our kids and me.

I love the man I married. Soldiering is his life.
But I stand among the silent ranks known as the Military Wife

Hi Liz,
Had to pick daughter up from Gatwick at 0610 hrs, so bit knackered. Also son taking bike test at end of month so wanted to go out with him to get more miles under his belt, good opportunity to scrub my new tyres in as well. Come up to the RTTW in October, bikes meet at Drayton Manor then ride to the National Memorial, brilliant day. Can buy food, drinks etc whilst waiting for ride to start, loo's provided as well!
Plenty of bikes to see and the memorial is fantastic. Spitfire flypast last year.
Got to get the girls ride together this year, if only to get the picture for the calendar!!

just recieved this today, as many should have,

Dear Bikers,

Wow guys what an amazing, emotional and moving day.
We have adopted this as our official annual ride - Afghan Heroes and Julia Stevenson have aleady begun the planning, so will see you all again next year.

Thank you for all your support and help in making yesterdays ride so amazing, we were absolutely amazed with the response from the Biking community us mums have never been kissed by so many bikers we and Afghan Heroes are very proud to be associated with you Bikers, we do hope we can together put on more events, we are already looking at a Rally in June of this year.

Our boys and girls would be rocking up there with the biggest smiles on their faces. You were absolutely fantastic and did them proud and we thank you for that.

We are having Afghan Heroes flags made and what would be nice is if everybody could fly one from their homes and their bikes, yesterday through you bikers we showed our troops that we were behind them now let's fly are flags as a nation and show the government solidarity.

We were very sorry that we ran out of wrist bands, unfortunately the Chinese customs seized some of them and wouldn't let us get them out of the Country in time.

If you click the following link and log in with your email address and bike registration (the same ones you registered for the event with), you can request your event wristband, as well as registering to allow us to claim Gift Aid which means that for every £1 you donated, we can claim 28p from HMRC (Inland Revenue); helping your donation go further. The current total for money raised on the day is £90,177.80, but with your help and gift aid this will pass the £100,000.

http://www.afghanheroes.org.uk/bikersevent.asp

Some of you heard the song Fields of Green which was written and sung by Classical Tenor Tim Pitman on Sunday at the ride. We are hoping to get this to number one to raise more funds for our Troops please help us achieve this by texting "Track heroes" to 83262 (Texts cost £1, which includes operator revenue share. plus standard network rate. UK only).

We are also having a DVD of the event which should be available in the next week or so, please keep your eyes on the web site.

People are also asking about the T Shirts and the official patch to commemorate the day.

The T Shirts are being done by sales@fingerprints-tees.co.uk
Contact: Dave Norton

The official patch is being done by - paulfe1@hotmail.com
Contact: Paul Ferguson

Once again we thank you all for all your help and support and we will see you all again soon.
