Which monster frames would my 996 engine fit into? Yup, you guessed it, I'm having second thoughts about selling itnow. I'm thinking of the possibility of transplanting my 996 engine into a donor monster that maybe has a blown engine. The obvious answer is S4, S4R and S4Rs but I can't afford any of those even if they were broken (I don't think).

Would it work and how difficult would it be? I'm guessing I'd need to source a swingarm etc. from somewhere too, or will a 996 single side swingarm fit?

Questions, questions!! :D

I know that swinger would fit. People fit them to normal 2V engines by modifying engine mount and shock mount on frame. In your case it would only be shock mount to the frame that would need a mod.

take a look here

or talk to RODUC who has a tidy 750 with 916 running gear (for sale)
or Viv at VTec, who has done a number of conversions including Grunter and SimonS's bikes.

Pretty much anyframe but the cross members may have to be cut and replaced as they may foul injectors on a non s4/r frame
Obviously 996 has the engine without the inbuilt swingarm bearings so a 916/996/998 swingarm would be used.Only a few frame mods to do which in my view is better than machining the engine. Radiator mounts and the obvious wiring loom and placement of ecu.

The engine cases for the S*R are different, they are wider where the swing arm fits and incorporate the bearings, whereas the 916/996 has the bearings in the frame, so S*R frames would not be suitable.

Are they not it the swing arm itself on the 916 swingarm. The frame is the frame and nothing more than a cradle to hang the engine. Think engine will fit anyframe you will find like I said other than injectors.
The frame will have to be modified for suspension minimum.

Yes but the 916/996 frames are extended at the bottom to pick up the swing arm pivot.
And as he has a 916 engine, he has to use a 916/996 swing arm and therefore has to use a 916/996 frame.

I think I have seen some where they cut and shut that bit on in a sense.

So does it have a long ended spindle and just a circlip at the other end. Is it captive.

The spindle is a long hollow bolt with a nut on the end.
Be aware that the 916/996 swing arm is shorter than the S*R version, even with the longer corse type the wheel base will be shorter by 25mm
