View Full Version : London Tunnel Run

Duke Konan
15-09-2009, 10:28 AM
Those of you who were there will remember the 4pm Ducati roar at the Ferrari/Ducati event in Kent some weeks ago. While it sounded great, I reckon it would have sounded a whole lot better if we had the walls of a tunnel bouncing that fantastic exhaust note back at us!

So...is anyone interested in a late night tunnel run through London's tunnels. The way I see it we would meet at a predetermined spot and ride through London on a pre-mapped route, hitting as many tunnels along the way as can be identified. The idea would be to have a civilised, lawful ride (i.e. observe the speed limit to keep plod happy) while enjoying the roar of a group of Ducatis in the confined space of a tunnel.

Anyone interested? Also, any tunnel suggestions appreciated! So far I've got:

1. Barbican
2. Blackfriars
3. Limehouse Link (watch out for those speed cameras!)
4. Rotherhithe
5. Blackwall

Dates flexible at the moment but thinking sometime in the next few weeks before the cold sets in.

Dont forget Dartford if you run out. I remember a group from DSC did it years ago.

7. Piccadilly

Is this actually safe to do??
Will they need to check the tunnels to make sure the accumulated decibels don't vibrate it into rubble?

Albie
15-09-2009, 11:14 AM
Also for best effect at legal speeds you will need to be in 2nd gear.

I'm sure it will be fine. If I remember my high school days correctly the odds of all the bike emitting sound at the exact same frequency which corresponds to the resonating frequency of the tunnel would be pretty slim. Besides, supercars do it, surely a few 1200cc and under motorcycles wouldn't bring a tunnel down!

15-09-2009, 12:59 PM
oh oh oh I kill to do that!!....
have done the dartford tunnel it was fun but I only have lame standard exhausts at the mo!

have done in on the monster still sounded nice!! and I thought oooh this is fun...

and on the kat as it has a nice Yoshi! a diferent noise but still fun!

Id have to go at the back as slow .. but also because I love the noise!!!!!....I rarley listen to music and never wear earplugs... I like to hear my engines so much...and it was that sound that sold me on a Monster... heard it loved it then missed it when it wasn't there.

Heard Yorkies cans at the weekend (HUGE GRIN !)! when you sit behind they sound the dogs!..... i wish!! excellent pipes!!

I really like taking bikes through tunnels... but not my car..

oooh i envy you lot!!...

my work bike is painted in proper glow in the dark paint.... like clock face.
I went througha little bridgey tunnel today that was dark and the bike suddenly emmitted this eerie bright green glow!! lol..... poor guys face behind me!

thin Only Fools and Horses Episode with the takaway and the gravestone!! same as my bike!

Tut, such a hooligan!

If I'm around, count me in :yoparty:

I'd imagine we can only dream of being so obnoxiously loud as to emerge from the tunnels while they collapse domino effect james bond styleee behind us :chuckle:

I could be keen, depending on times/dates obviously.

If it's in the week, I could take a de-tour after work, and sneak off after the Dartford tunnel or Blackwall (if we're travelling south!)

Steveo
15-09-2009, 01:24 PM
Count me in if I'm free on the chosen date...it's loud enough doing the commute through the Blackwall on my own so should be fun with a few...

@Steveo - OUT!!!! :)

I'm in, and since everyone's asking for a date I thought I'd suggest one - I reckon doing this on a weekday after work is a good idea, just after peak hour so the traffic has thinned out but still enough cars around to frighten :)

Who wants to go next Tuesday (the 22nd) @ 7pm?

budchawla
15-09-2009, 02:32 PM
Oh and also apologies for disappearing on Sunday - one minute Nick was right behind me and the next minute there was no sign of anyone, I figured we were all heading our separate ways anyway so after hanging back for a short while I decided to take off and hit the M25. See you all again soon!

Duke Konan
15-09-2009, 03:01 PM
I'll remind you to bring the camera and this time we have to try and get more than just tree tops!

Seem like it's going to be a good number of us which is great! Assume the 22nd works for everyone? Does 7pm seem a little early though? I'm often on the road around the City and the West End at that time and it's still fairly crowded.

Was thinking more like 8-9pm?

This is a wicked idea, shame I no longer live in Wimbledon or I would love to pop into every tunnel I could find.
I try it around Basingstoke but the tunnels aren't really long enough to get some decent noise going.

Strangley the Shoreham tunnel near Brighton deadened the sound even though there were 9 bikes going through it at the time and 4 of them were monsters!

Count me in !!! The more the merrier and the louder we'll sound....
So where do we meet up

Duke Konan
15-09-2009, 08:42 PM
Here's one suggested route that was done in March this year http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendId=47495121&blogId=479210608

Alternatively we could do something very similar without circling the squares - the same start point, down Sloane Street, Piccadilly underpass, Trafalgar square, cross river at Westminster, left on York Road, left on to Waterloo bridge, Kingsway tunnel, Holborn. Back down to the river, Blackfriars tunnel, cross the river at London bridge, Tooley Street Tunnel, Rotherhithe Tunnel, Limehouse Link and finally Blackwall tunnel!

Once again please vote on your preferred date/time - http://www.doodle.com/dyik6miu3cvixfmd

Let's make some noise!!

Nickj
15-09-2009, 11:20 PM
Now the question is baffles in or out?:D

LOL Is there really an option on the baffles.

If someone could organise moving London eastwards for the evening I spect some of this end of the worlds people might fetch up. Not too likely though :(
I'll see if I can find a local tunnel and join in

19 loud bikes in the rotherithe runnel at once
I'm still giggling my ass off. Surprised the tiles stayed on the Walls

the looks on some if the car drivers faces coming the other way were priceless

big: no
clever: definitely not
worth it: yes yes yes yes yes

Great turn out. thanks konan for suggestion and leading. Great to see faces old and new.

what a noise!! What a night. I loved taking over the double yellows in Little Italy, and the cops sat in the car not bothering us at all!! Loads of people taking photos, coming over to chat.

Nice to meet everyone, although trying to remember 20 names, faces and screen name is impossible!! :dizzy:.

I recon we should have a regular central London after work meet. Even if it doesn't involve tunnels...

It was a great idea so, a big thank you to Konan (and whoever helped) for organizing it. It has also been very nice to meet you guys, I wasn't expecting so many people :D

Fantastic show, sadly the video is rubbish, not nearly enough light for that camera but I'll try and sort out a few usable bits. Great to see so many old and new faces! Top job for organising it Konan.

Man on a scale of 1 to Epic… that was ***king epic! :)

I really liked the guy at the end that, after taking a good long look at the monsters parked up, looked me straight in the eyes and asked in all earnestness:

“Alright, so which is better…? Harley or Kawasaki?”

Err…wtf?

Well, a great night for my first meet up with you guys with a larger than expected turn out, it certainty turned a few heads around London and made a bit of noise:shocked::thumbsup:

A few thanks, Konan good idea and good route, most of us managed to stay together :p

Sorry I have trouble remembering my own name :fou: let alone 20 new faces but

The guy on the yellow IOM for the rear light bulb and Ronnie (I Think!) for the escort back to Chelsea Bridge.

Only took a few photo's as I was to busy talking and grinning from the run.:spin: but here they are,

Yeah, he came over saying “before I start, don’t beat me up”, while swaying a little and walking towards the row of bikes.

I was thinking “we won’t, as long as you step away from the bikes!!” :chuckle:

He only turned up as Grumpy had his 'looney Magnet' turned on.

But as Grumpy said, if he hadn't I wouldn't have turned up either.

I may have had the oldest Monster there but was proud I was the only yellow one too. It is yellow under the dirt honest.

Hi guys, I was 'tail end charlie' on the Griso. and the sound was awesome! Especailly thro' the Rotherhithe, it felt like the whole tunnel was vibrating:spin:
Watching pedestrians faces as we moved in convoy was a hoot!:thumbsup:Lots of staring and some pointing as we rode the route.
As to when we parked up, yes I must have had the looney magnite on! do I find them or what, some looney with a paperbag on nis head trying to have a conversation with 20 people who arn't interested.
Great to meet all of you, new faces and old, as for Slob's idea of a repeat performance in daylight, sounds like an early sunday run club is in the making.

Might have been said before ;-) but what a turnout! We figured maybe 7 or 8 would show!! I actually ended up having to go to work to sort out an emergency in the docklands straight from Bar Italia so I rode most of the route again :-D.

The really odd thing that only occurred to me when I was about get on the bike to ride home at 7am was that I'd left my earplugs out during the ride to catch all the noise - but then spent all night indoors wearing them!

Great to meet you all, well done Konan - and I vote in favour of the Sunday morning tunnel run club!

Could not stop smiling about it today, everyone at work asked me what you smiling about so i told them all. I am up for a Sunday run earlier the better for me, perhaps we could get another one of those voting poll thingy with suggested dates and times and we can all tick when available that seem to work well this time.

what a great night, thanks again.
