OK, me and my 19 year old nephew are after a tatty old pile of the proverbial - 4 stroke, 125 seems to be the best thing to start on - to take apart and put back together with a Haynes book of lies and learn how these things happen... (Thanks Slob...)

Any ideas or clues where it's best to look? EBay and autotrader so far - but if anyone can help out any more than that please drop me a PM (or an old bike!)

Not sure how much money you're looking to spend, but don't rule out a crash damaged bike that you could do all your learning on, then fix it up and sell it for a profit (if it still runs... ;) ) or break it and sell the parts.

Something like this would be a good start - nice simple engine / bike - no rusty bolts to break off in holes etc.

Thanks Trent - you're right about an outside bike! Will hopefully find one that looks a bit like the blue one you put the link too - I think he has about £250 tops...Thanks and will keep everyone posted with the project!!!

If its one you want to 'learn' from and not 'learn and fix' then try scrap and breakers for things that will never work again. I threw out an old honda C70 engine a couple of years back (priscillas original), there must be loads of them around, have you tried the canal?

Thanks Chris - ping!

Canals are not a good place Dave - not for bikes anyway......

You can have a working GT550 Kwak, the shaft drive thingy for £200. Works but needs attention, like a carb strip & rebuild... but no real problems else.. probably be able to sell it on for £4-500 if it's all shiny and sounding good.

try insurance auctions, some good bargain there.. a friend picked up a 99 R1 cat C for 700 quid (worth once fixed about 4K). NSEC (http://www.nsec.co.uk/yard1.htm) runs them down here and do them on tuesdays, worth giving them a call as all non-selling lots then go on for breaking. Tomorrow they got this (http://autos.blue-sock.com/clients/7/item.php?count=60&makemodel=&trimlevel=&fueltype=&pics=pics&orderby=lotno&value=766100) but they always have bikes in the yard
BTW, I would start with a twin, so he'll learn about timing and so on straight away.
