Hi guys,

My monster sadly suffers from the flaking paint syndrome :( most of which is happening on the footrest hangers..

On top of my head I could get them: painted, powder coated or.. anodized?

Painting seems the easy option, powder coating sounds nice but I don't know a good place in London and not sure how expensive the process is, then anodizing could be a project to do at home!

I know a couple of you guys played with anodizing so maybe you could enlighten me on:

how complicated the process is
would stripping off the paint and anodize them actually work
what would the finish look like (I don't want them to be too bling-bling, just to blend with the silver frame like they're supposed to)

Cheers!

Anodizing is more expensive than powdercoating and the piece
that you want to anodize must be perfectly smooth, as this process
dyes the aluminum not covering one single scratch.

Powdercoating is used quite often for such parts as it's very
abrasion-proof.

Powdercoated hangers can be seen in the UKmoc bikes section on Pedros bike.
Anodizing is better used for forks as the tubes keep the same measure.

Powder coating is the way to go. Had mine done black over the winter, made a real diiference to how clean/tidy the bike looked and the finish is so tough.

Err, nooo, mine has nickel plated Cycle Cat Rearsets.....

I'd go with Powder Coating for standard footrest hangers

you will find it very hard to get anyone to anodise cast aluminium, due to its composition it can really only be coloured with dark colours as the anodising process causes the surface to darken before it sees any dye.
i can do them for you, heres a pic of some i did for another member

I had mine powder coated metallic silver by these people http://www.aerocoat.net/ It's not cheap but they look very good and are a fairly good match for the original silver painted finish on my early M900

Thanks for the offer Gremlin, looks like a nice finish on your pics! I may go with powder coating to match the existing colour though.

Could anyone recommend a place in London?

I also had mine powdercoated, although i wished i had made more of an effort in flatting down some of the scabby bits on them, you can still see a few small craters on mine, so make sure you get them as smooth as poss before you take them in, it'll be worth it.

I took my frame, the hangers and the suspension hoop, the lot came to £98, including a coat of laquer, so i would think the hangers would be in the region of around £20 each.
I think the cost may also be dictated as to whether your parts would be going in on their own, or with a batch of parts having the same colour, such as car wheels etc.

It was about 4 or 5 years ago now, and I'm pretty sure I had them done at the same time as a lot of other parts for another bike so I'm not sure what it would cost. Probably the best thing you can do is e-mail Aerocoat a picture of your footrest frame and ask for a quote including return postage. You could give them a ring first. They're good people to deal with, which kind of makes up for them being in a rather remote location.

Trestan Finishers in Southampton will powder coat a pair of Hangers for £20 plus postage if required. Their finish is very good.

These guys, Triple S, seem to have a good rep for powder coating: http://www.triple-s.co.uk/

Also I'd ask the same question of my engine side covers (mine have gone the same way as the hangers), who thinks it's best to powder coat vs spray paint?

Also, i have a matt gold framed M600, do anyone know if the gold is sprayed or powder coated? I've had battery acid spilt all down mine and need to sort it out :(

I think the frames are spray painted at factory

The dark gold on early bikes is a very hard colour to match
