I've been looking into mounting my own tyres and thought it would be nicer to have spare rims as well. Looking on ebay there are loads of Ducati wheels but what (cheap) ones will fit my S4 without mods?

The ST4 one should be a straight fit.
The fronts are all the same.
600/750/800 have a 4.5" Rear, so you want 900/1000.
Later models have spokes that are fat at the hub and thin at the rim, those should go straight on,
AFAIK there's no significant difference between wheels from different models (apart from single siders)
Strangely I may have a set of wheels from a 1000 available in a few months, if you're not in a great hurry, since I just picked up a set of S4 wheels for it.
You may want to consider a spare set of discs too, since this will dramatically reduce the time it takes to swap wheels.

Rob,

I appreciate the advice, and if the money is right for your wheels I'm in no hurry (keep me posted?)! I should be able to get a few more months out of my current tyres.

Cheers

The other problem is weight, motorcycle wheels are generally calculated 8:1
ie. losing 1kg off your wheels gives the performance equivalent to losing 8kg of sprung weight from elswhere on the chassis, hence me buying a set of lighter S4 wheels for my 1000.(and why you'll pay £2K for a set of Forged Mag. or CF wheels)

I'm mainly commuting so that's not a factor for me, the convenience of having spare wheels far outweighs that (no pun intended!).

doesn't spindle size varies in early monster models?

yes, but you can get round that by changing whel bearings and spacer.

The other thing to watch for is mechanical speedo drive [On the front axle], or electric speedo on the swing arm, as that changes the hub width on the front wheel!
