Hiya

Looking to upgrade my forks, ideally with an adjustable Showa or an Ohlins if i can find one

Seen a few forks on Ebay but not sure what will fit without mods

what do i need to look out for?
I know i need 65mm Caliper mounts
what are the Yoke Diameters?

apart from the S2r 1000 re there any other models that are a direct fit?
eg these (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Ducati-SHOWA-Monster-900-ie-fork-legs-NEW_W0QQitemZ390031208583QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Mot orcycle_Parts?hash=item390031208583&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A10%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318#h t_1396wt_909)

I understand that some PPL advocate getting my existing shocks rebuilt and setup for my weight, i would like to et an idea of the price. could anyone recommend a suspension specialist in or around london ?

thanks in advance

Ali

Mike Dawson will do as good a job as any. He used standard non-adjustable Marzochis in his 620 race bike last year to good effect so he knows all about getting the best from them. You can find him at MD Racing and plenty on here have recommended him.
I fiited adjustable Showas on to my S2R. They are a 50mm diameter - that's what you need to be on the lookout for. I paid £115 for mine on ebay, brand new still in the box. Some guy had bought them for his S2r 800 then sold the bike before getting round to fitting them. I'll still get be them to someone like K-Tech though as they are still not quite right for me, even with the adjustments.

Ali,
I upgraded the forks on my S2R with those from an S4R, which I bought from someone on this forum. They were a straight swap. I can't remember which other ones fit.
Or you could just swap the internals - David at Solo Corse ( aka Nogaromil) will supply springs according to your weight. http://www.solocorse.co.uk/ - give him a ring he is really helpful.
I would be more tempted to upgrade the springs and spend my money on the rear shock or upgrading the brakes.
If you do decide to change the forks you should be able to get some cheaper than the ones from the 900 on ebay.

Nice one gilps, thanks for that,

Interesting, so even with the adjustable showas, you suggest I might just be better to get my Marzocchis and rear showa sorted out and setup for my body weight. will give

like your bike alot btw, I have already pinched a couple of ideas for upgrades from the photos in other posts.

Not fitted yet but Just bought some Silver brembo 4 Pads and Galfer style Braking wave discs. very Cool indeed
I have been thinking that i should upgrade my front forks at the same time as they are already inclined to dive and bob a bit under braking as im a big lad ;-) and the more powerful 4 pad brakes will only make this more likely

Hi Anne, did your S4R front end include yokes etc, or did the forks fit your existing ones?

so maybe i should be looking at brakes, front forks and rear shock resprung and setups at the same time?

Hi I have just had new internals fitted to my forks (S2R 1000) by Colin at 100% suspension. Not ridden them yet but he has been very helpful and really good price.

The strange thing about adjustable forks is that most people get the forks adjusted to the right settings then never touch them again, which is understandable. The only reason to alter them would be for a track day or to carry a pillion. If you don't plan on doing any of that then a well set up set of non-adjustable forks will do the job just as well as an adjustable set. Even with adjustable forks they still only operate within certain parameters and if that doesn't suit you then you still end up getting them reworked by Maxton or K-Tech or similar, which is where I find myself.
It is possible to get the Marzochis working properly but it needs someone who knows what they are doing, such as Mike Dawson. The problem with the Marzochis is that they are a budget fork. They only have rebound damping on one leg. The Showas were better. I know where there's a set of Showas which were set up for DD racing, so are quite firm. I think the guy wants about £200 for them, but you would get around £100 back for yours. Let me know if you want his number.
You are right, the P4 calipers will swamp the front end. The rear shock is a budget item too on the S2R so well worth swapping that out.

...and here's another thought. There's a few DD racers out there with Marzochis and Showas which have been modified by Maxton and are partly adjustable. I think recent rule changes have either made them illegal or unnecessary so there may be a few people out there who may be willing to swap their forks for a standard set. Might be worth a post up on DSC if you are interested.

i replaced my springs with a set from wilbers, big improvement but jacked the bike up half an inch so dropped it down the forks a bit. will probably go a rear from them, they look spot on too and nicely priced...

Thanks for all your comments

I would like to have adjustable shock and forks if i can as i do intend to start carrying a pillion and i am planning the odd track day so i will check out what a wilbers adjustable rear will set me back

Gilps, if your any of your DD friends Showas are adjustable and in good nick, i might well be interested, and thanks fro the DSC tip, i might well post something up there

I have spoken to Mike Dawson who seems very nice and is talking around 4hrs @ £220 for the labour (ie excl. springs and oil) to do a consultation, uprate the spings and oil in the forks then tune front and rear suspension for me.

Have not managed to get hold of David at Solocorse re springs as yet but will keep trying

will let you know how i get on

thanks again

I have read this twice now about standard Marzochis only rebound damping on one leg, I remain to be convinced of this. So I did a little test this morning ( I just happened to be fitting a better set of forks to my 620), I stripped a fresh set of standard Marzochis that I have bought from CK&AK, the internals are identical, then I tested the rebound damping on them, once again, identical. Next I removed the original forks with 1100 miles on them ( yes eleven hundred, they had a chrome problem on the sliders) Tested the rebound damping, both the same .

Only one leg, and I think it's the lhs has rebound damping. Not sure how they do it or differ, but I suspect the non-rebounding one does not have valves fitted to control the rebound. Bear in mind they will both rebound, but the one with damping should come back a tad slower. Are you sure they are Marzochis and not Showas.

i put on my bike 999 forks and triple clamps (cnc)

but it needs heavy modification, th best choise as glimps suggest is s4/s2r/m1000s forks
