Hi all,

well I recieved my 600ss clip on handlebars yesterday, bought on the bay for a very reasonable £40 for the pair, and fitted them to my monster this morning. I love the look of dropped bars, and I am hoping they will actually make my bike more comfortable, i have a tendency to hunch my shoulders when riding in the old upright position, and my left shoulder gets really sore so i am banking on the new body position forcing me to have better posture. Will just have to ignore the pain in my wrists and lower back....:chuckle:

here are some before and after shots...
BEFORE:-

http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq125/pfcdaz/S8300683.jpg

I'm really happy with the look, have had a quick ride down the road and it feels like a different bike, more poised through corners and counter steering is way easier. only problem is the new bars have obscured the mounting point for the front indicators, am gonna see if i can fit them either side of the headlight temporarily, and get some bare end flashers long term. will continue adding to this threas as i change bits and bobs, why....because someone else did something similar and it seemed a cool idea!

Nice, maybe change those mirrors in time too??!! ;)

I do like the classic red (and black) monsters.

Looks nice just like Gullys did when he whacked some clipons on. Bar end mirrors seem to suit clip ons tbh. Just tidy up the holes where the bar risers were with either black plugs or some domed stainless bolts.

Keep up the good work.

Tidy is good.

the mirrors will go as soon as i have found a decent alternative. i am a little torn at the moment between bar end indicators and some of the DPM style mirrors, or going for a combined mirror/indicator unit. the second would be considerably cheaper, but the first looks better in my head

Get some small led indicators to fit on headlamp brackets tucked in out of the way from harms way . Thats what I would do anyhow.

You could always get some post '00 headlight clamps, as they have the indicator holes pre drilled. Or like Albie said, drill holes in the clamps you already have. Although it all depends on if you want different or smaller indicators...............

Clip ons look good mate!

I you are intrested in some bling mirrors I have some dpm billet ally ones for sale.offered them to space cadet(check his thread ref mirror thread size it has a link to the site and pics of the mirrors) he went for others. they cost me over £100 but will sell for £50. still look as new. i am also doing a rebiuld over the winter so i am selling them to help fund the retro ones i need for the new look for my bike.(that price won't eve pay for 1 of the ones i want.)I am sure Albie would agree they are top notch gear and look great on the bike.

go on ebay.
search for seller jack lilley triumph.
They are selling roadracing mirrors and i cant remember the brand but some funky looking. bar end indicators.

Are you tall? reason i ask is your forks dont stick up far enough through the top yoke. should stick through about 1 and 1/2 inches.

I am 5"9, so not particularly, but the forks are set up as they were when i bought the bike in march. assumed they were in the right place, will have to investigate further, thanks for the heads up.

below are some new pics, i made some very temporary brackets with a drill and a couple of bits of aluminium cos i don't want to drill any original parts at the moment, i want to be able to return the bike to original condition if i choose to, so now i have front indicators again and can ride the bike legally....

Went for my first proper ride on it this afternoon, just 10 miles to shake it down give any loose bolts a chance to make themselves known. Definitely suffering from post assembly paranoia, i thought the front wheel would fall off with every rut in the road....

wow how much for ss clip ons:eek: I have just taken a pair of them off my 750ss cos 1 was a little twisted,i think a blow torch and new paint maybe in order:rolleyes:
If your not intrested i will put the de preto moto mirrors for open sale on the site(i am sure they will go at that price) I just drilled new holes lower in the light bracket when i fitted clip-ons and they fitted ok.(I kept original units cos they can be seen better than mini units)

I wouldnt worry about drilling precise holes in the headlamp brackets. They wont devalue a bike as you are performing a functional mod. All later ones have the holes as is where they now mount them. Also lightens the bike a tad.

Are you tall? reason i ask is your forks dont stick up far enough through the top yoke. should stick through about 1 and 1/2 inches.

The forks should (depending on the model) be around 284mm from the bottom of the bottom yoke to the top of the forks - roughly around 22-23mm above the top yoke. 1 and 1/2 inches is going to steepen the rake and make it twitchy and would probably clash with the handlebars

new riding position is twitchy enough at the moment, nearly scraped it down the road on the way home from work tonight. someone in traffic on the opposite side of the road decided to turn round, pulled straight out in front of me. i hit the anchors a little too heavily considering the rain, cue a huge wobble. fortunately i just about hung on and kept upright.

put some heated grips on yesterday, oxford jobs, will be riding through the winter so a necessary mod i reckon.

Dead easy to fit, although i have to rev the bike to get them to start heating up or the auto cut out kicks in. I have also been having a few issues with the indicators not kicking in unless i rev the bike, so i think my battery may be on the way.....

Maybe not, follow the wires from the alternator (front nearside of the engine) to the connector.

Check the wires at the connector, give them a good clean, WD40.

Then follow them to the next connector, repeat etc be good to do them all

Sometimes the wires at the first connector overheat and rust or burn the connectors. They might need chopping out and replacing.

Maplins will be your friend at this point (its an electrical shop ;) )

straight to the battery, they have "o" connectors that the normal battery terminal bolt screws through, the unit has a cutout if the current? is too low, so if you leve them switched on by mistake it turns off before it kills your battery

am planning on a tail chop soon, ones i lay my hands on an led rear light with integral indicators.

front indicators are proving to be a problem, got some £50 kellerman bar end indicators off ebay for a tenner, only to find it was a single unit. another one came up but i missed out due to a chronic work day when the auction ended. am now waiting patiently for another one to appear.....

after that i want one of those alien headlight/fairing thingies that a couple of the bikes of the month have and i am done.

oh apart from getting anodised footpegs and replacing the top yoke......i have plans y'know

More progress to report, i have chopped the tail and put on an led rear light/indicator unit.

I have tried to take the sort of pictures that i couldn't find when planning the chop, hopefully they will help people in future. first issue was the seat catch, which i threaded out from the frame, then turned around and remounted, before and after shots below....
http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq125/pfcdaz/bike%20mods/tail%20chop/IMG_0011.jpg
http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq125/pfcdaz/bike%20mods/tail%20chop/IMG_0016.jpg

not a difficult job, but required bending the j shaped mounting piece straight to fit it through the frame, then bending it back after.

next the chop itself, a thoroughly nerve racking afair and i stood for several minutes, angle grinder poised before making the first cut, cue a flurry of hot metal sparks and a retreat to the garage to retrieve a blanket to cover the back wheel and associated bike parts, which promptly caught fire..... only a little bit though and with a bit of care and panicky sweat i managed to chop the end off.

next step is a bracket for the number plate, made from a handy piece of aluminium, chored from my mates garage. i am a little worried it is too flimsy, but i will ride her for a bit and see, have found a pre made bracket for £20 in a local bike shop if necessary, but credit crunch etc....

http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq125/pfcdaz/bike%20mods/tail%20chop/IMG_0021.jpg

so with the bracket on, all that remainded was to put everything back together

but i am very pleased with the result so far, hope these pics help other potential choppers.

I used some black bar ends that came with some grips.
You could get some rubber grommets from Halfords. Re the brackets for the number plate.
I used a piece of bar under and infront of the light and bolted two brackets from B&Q
bent to the angle I req'd. This was after a universal mount from a dealer broke with
the vibration.

I have dne a few more bits this week, the joys of being a teacher, regular time off to tinker with the bike.

I replaced the 13 year old stock rubber front brake hose with a goodridge braided job on monday, makes a hell of a difference to braking. still got to do the rear pipe, but the shop was out of banjo bolts in the right size.

Today i finally got some bar end indicators fitted, and got rid of the temporary brackets and original front indicators i had been running for a while. see piccys below...

http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq125/pfcdaz/021.jpg
http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq125/pfcdaz/020.jpg

Next step is to repair the damage done from riding through the winter. the rearsets are knackered and the engine casings look awful. Fortunately the local bike shop told me the unit next door does powdercoating. He has also just invested in a tyre remover, so i am probably going to get the casings, rearsets and wheels powder coated, possibly in black.

Also got a carb tuner on order to tune it a bit, and i should be set for the summer!

no not as easy as pics would make you beleive, I've done rizomas but also with a lowering of headlight and clocks so a little different. Anyway it was a bit of trial and error with relocating everything, found my choke cable was getting snagged and it was a very tight fit behind the clock for all the cables. Getting the repositioining of everything on the bar was not easy. Ended up drilling more holes than necessary in order to acomodate the relocating of screws.

What we thought might take 4 hrs took 8 hrs!!

the brake lines were a huge pain with the clip ons fitted, but i bought different shaped banjo bolts when i did the new hoses and they fit behind the clocks much easier now.

will post a few new pictures up later, i have fitted clocks from an early s4, so i have a tach now, and am currently painting one of the brackets that the footpecks attach to, i am going to have an uneven bike for a week, cos i only have time to do the right side today....

Thanks guys,
Ive hopefully got harris ones on the way soon, so will set aside a good 8 hours for fitting. May have to chase for hints and tips. Will get a post going tonight, Ive mocked up a tail chop today, couldn't bring myself to hacksaw the frame just yet, but everythings in place and seems to work ok for a wonderful £3.08 for brackets from homebase (temporary measure until i get some plate bent to suit).

04-05-2009, 08:15 PM
Right then a few more pics. Firstly the new clocks, off of an s4 i think, the tacho was purely ornamental and the idiot lights were all wrong when i first installed it. I got around this by using the old wiring loom from the original clocks in the new set, so now everything lights up properly. I have botched a lead from the tachometer to the coil and the rev counter is working, but the connection is a bit haphazard with lots of electrical tape, i will do a proper job when i have time.

http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq125/pfcdaz/bike%20mods/IMG_0069.jpg

Next comes stage one of repairing the damage that winter riding has done. I have only done one side, the other to be done next week. Painting took ages today because of the cold weather unfortunately, the finish was pretty good, but i chipped a few bits when i was reataching everything.

A few more changes to report. recieved a bikini fairing in the week off a later monster, drilled the headlight bracket and attached the mounting bolts and screen.

Trip to BMF show in Peterborough yesterday and i finally got some decent mirrors, really pleased with how they look on the bike, i also picked up some pointless anodised red valve dust caps for the tyres. and i bought a couple of mini bar ends that fit in the end of the frame tubes where i did the tail chop

they are the later ss ones that fit above the top yolk, so will be less fiddly to fit.

Well it has to be said painting the headlight was a complete nightmare, the black centre was easy and came up well, but please, i implore you all don't bother with halfords paintmatching service, the spray was rubbish, chucked out the paint in dollops, rather than a fine mist. lots of sanding and i have a reasonable finish, but i am not at all happy with it.

Looks great from a distance, but i will strip it back again soon and use either a better quality paint, or get it done by a pro.

I just hope you can forgive me!!!

looks perfect on my bike now, the paint is a touch darker than the rest of the bike, but not awful. i think i am going to leave the bike alone now and just ride the bloody thing, i have missed too many weekends this year already because i have it in bits.

in the winter i think an engine upgrade may be on, and while i do that i will strip it back to the frame and have all the nasty bits powder coated properly.

When i bought this bike my dad said "ducati's are good cos you can trick them up..."

my response "why would anyone want to do that?" famous last words etc.

got a lot of tidying to do now, the frame is looking a bit tatty and the engine casings are in a horrible state, plus a lot of tarnish on the exhaust pipes, paint is scruffy on the rocker/cam covers and belt covers.

i really want to strip it back completely, but i am a little scared, not sure if i am enough of a mechanic yet to take it all apart and i have a habit of losing things in obvious places and taking hours to find them :)

the other thing that bugs is the piston slap on the flat cylinder, i want to cure this but not really sure how to go about it without reboring, any suggestions welcome. as i said before i will probably replace the engine with a bigger one, i think a 900 will fit, but i assume i will have to upgrade the front brakes and forks etc. to stop it being too ungainly.

all of this does rely on my wife not getting to angry with me haemoraging money in the bikes direction....

Dont be scared about a makeover . Enough people on this site to help or guide you through things. Cheap tips or wheres best to go and get work done. Wait until winter layoff time around November and bring her out refreshed for spring.
All you need is a manual , a garage /shed a digital camera and sockets and allen keys and plenty of coffee.

go for it, if you're methodical and take your time on your approach to stripping it the rebuilt will be easy enough. From what I've seen so far you're a good enough mechanic to get through it!
As blueprintz says get those side panels off, they cover up a very nice part of the trellis IMO.
