nice one - thanks all.

slightly mystified by that first video though - a 1.5 thou feeler doesn't fit between the shim and the rocker arm yet he's happy to say it's 2 thou because he can measure 6-4 at the top

I think he's trying to illustrate that measuring the closer directly, rather than at the top and subtracting, is harder to do accurately.

I think he is indicating that the actual clearances are not that critical
as long as
1) the closing cam is not rubbing AT ALL - EVER
2) and there is a small rattle (0.05-0.1 mm) on the openers.

The reason I think this is that the some of the closing cams on both sets of 900 heads I have worked on were not well enough ground to give the same closed clearance across most of the dwell. So you may find 0.10 or more at one point and yet when you put a 0.05mm bigger shim in - it binds.

So having spent many many £££s on closing shims and MBP collets I started relaxing and being a bit less obsessive. It seems to work the engine is v quiet and runs well.

<strike>i guess if you were really daft you could shim it so that the rocker arms were working against each other?

not sure - i'm still getting my head round this</strike>

where do you buy your shims etc?

edit - i am of course talking total bo11ocks
