hi all as title says really as i need a top end gasket set for mine, as its a different engine due to mine comiting suicide. now i called my local duke dealer (moto rapido, winchester) and he advised me there are 3 different kits available 91-93 £14.00 93-97 £17.04 and 98-00 £40.34:eek: so i need to figure out which year it is so i can get her running again.

ta merry vuch in advance, hopefully! lol

If you look at some of the main engine castings you should see a little circle with an elephant symbol by it - thats the date the casting was made so hopefully should give you the info you need.

If the engine is the same as your old one then its a 98 on
The engines on darks are different to earlier bike.
I think the clutch slave is on the other side as well as other differences.
if your new engine is not the same and it is out of a uk monster then it will be the 93-97 gasket set you'll need.

If its an earlier supersport engine the cases would be black.

i might be wrong but i thought the dark with yellow wheels and frame was only made in 98 so it would be the 98-00 one you need

The engine in the pic is the later one as it has the clutch rod on the alternator side.

I can't believe Ducati can date an engine by its number. Do they just stamp random numbers on and keep no records at all?:on: How many of us have duplicate engine numbers?

its deffo later than 95, so that would suggest the later model (and higher price)

What did the elephants say?

Thats it then, give the elephants the engine number and they will tell you what year it is!
Its obvious really as elephants are well known for their memories they obviously remember each and every engine number.
I wonder if they also deal with the key card-ECU codes?

Look just by the spark plug hole, see the circle? Thats the date stamp showing when the casting was made. There may or may not be an elephant logo as well

which you can just see on the left hand barrel in this shot.

reet then! upon investigation my elephants seem to have migrated somewhere! but all is not lost.....just confusing!

i have a round stamp type thingy near the top cylinder with "96" in zee middle! and on the heads where the belts run i have a stamp with a load on numbers around it with "97" in zee middle! i have taken some piccies and will upload them in a bit!

cheers again

Sound like you must have the 'middle-aged' engine then:)

Pre-1998, but not the early version..........

Engines CAN be determined - I dont know who your dealer is (bet its one on the coast tho ;) )- but most others can get this done for you - but it might take a day or so.

Your engine has the clutch slave cylinder on the lhs. I thought that was only on the later engine. Can anyone confirm if the middle era engine also had the clutch cylinder there.
