View Full Version : Black foam padding under fuel tank??

I fitted the Ducati performance air-filter/air-box lid set to my 620 last night and obviously had to lift up the tank (first time I have done it), underneath the tank was a black foam padding ‘jacket’, presumably it filled the gap between the tank and the old air-box lid.

I didn’t see that it was doing much and because the new air-box lid is now completely open I’ve taken the padding out.

What is the padding for?

And was I correct to take it out? (I can easily put it back in)

Thanks, Mark.

I think it's just sound deadening, although it may reduce turbulence above the filter I guess.
I have 2 x open airboxes, both with the padding left in, not had any problems.

If you're on about the foam padding stuck to the bottom of the tank as opposed to the airbox lid, its there to help keep the tank cool. Remember, its full of fuel and sits right on top of a very hot engine. :D

Mmm, maybe I should put mine back in?

Mmm, may be I should put it back in too!!

It was definitely stuck (velcro’ed) to the bottom of the tank, there wasn’t anything stuck to the top of the air-box.

I’ve since been informed by a Ducati mechanic that the padding is nothing to do with heat insulation and is safe to take out.

Whether you do is obviously up to you, I’ll leave mine out for the time being.

Good, something else that can go on e-bay!!

Does anyone know what type of foam it is? I thought it might be closed cell foam (https://www.gbfoamdirect.co.uk/foam-cut-to-size/plastazote-foam-closed-cell-foam-sheets/) but not sure.

My foam has been replaced, before I brought the bike, with aluminium foil faced foam.

It looks a mess, but does the job.

after 10-15 years the stock foam decomposes and you end up with a bag of powder stuck under the tank
