I want a project for this winter, but only have about 500 notes to spare. Would like either a jap sportsbike, though wouldnt stick my nose up at something italian (though i doubt i would get something italian for 500 quid!)

You could easily get something italian for £500 Neil.

If you looked really heard youd probably get an old SS for that sort of money. If I was looking for an old italian project then it would have to be a moto morini 3.5. GT had one so I could pester the crap out of him to help me fix it when it went wrong !!

Me - im off to restore my old moped if I can find one ! (MBX50)

An older shaped SS would be good, even a 600.

Look round for a crashed bike then buy the parts to repair it. There are plenty of straight frames out there for not much money. A mate of mine bought a GSX-R600 for £125 and then spent a few months and just under £600 to turn it into a decent trackbike. It's just a shame that on its first outing (last Friday) he managed to bin it at Donington. Still, the damage is only cosmetic and it means he doesn't have to crash his R1.

A trackbike project is worth thinking about.

Having had a couple of Morini's I can honestly say they are rather marvelous in a quaint-old-fashioned, kinda way. Mind you, you have to like the gears being on the wrong side, the kickstarter being on the left (try it sometime, I could never start it sitting on the bike), the weird riding position, constant fiddling(!), bonkers electrics, stopping regularly to pick up the bits that have just dropped off, plus a whole host of crazy oddball stuff. Ideal winter project bike then!

(Although I suspect £500 would buy you something that's probably been kept under a waterfall for several years, rather than the nice one illustrated)

The 999/749 range is looking like alot of bike for the money nowadays.
And the 916/996/998/748 range is even better value for money to buy!!

I saw a 748R in MCN this week for £4k. One of Ducati's best ever bikes. :D

I know its not £500 but its still dirt cheap.

P.S. I'm selling a 748 / 916 / 996 frame, shock, forks, swing arm and brake calipers if anybody's interested?

The frame has no numbers (I bought it like that over a year ago) so it can't go on the road. Ideal for a track bike project though.

Possibly have a 748 engine to go in the frame too but its being checked to see if its knackered first.

Not at all. I bought a rolling frame a few months ago:

I already had most of the parts that I mentioned below. I only bought it for the wheels and engine. But, as it came with a road legal frame, I'm using that instead of this one:
