Do we have any Ducati Dealer tech guys out there? ....

I would like to know if there is a service bulletin changing the belt tension freqs on the 2 valve bikes. I saw a post somewhere out there saying that they were having problems with the belts set too tight on the settings in the official service manuals ...... This is where they use the DDS with the frequency sensor gizmo eg: the 800 s2r uses 145hz Horizontal cylinder and 160hz vertical.

I have tried some software by Chris Hall which uses a cheap mic connected to your average laptop. I was getting consistant results. Chris has designed the software to sample the "twang" of the belt and arrive at a frequency as the Ducati service manual uses.

Cheers

Most people use the go / no go method with a 5mm & 6mm allen key.
Tighten the belts with the tensioner roller until a 5mm allen key will slide between the back of the belt & the tensioner roller but the 6mm won't.

Do this on both belts & turn the engine over several times by hand & recheck the measurement.

This is the method I have used in the past & it's worked ok for me.

Hey Desmo dogs have quite good hearing, why not do some training to woof at the correct frequency. Be lots cheaper than buying a frequency detector and no extra running costs either.
Personally I'll stick to the '5mm don't 6mm do' clearance system.

Just to agree with the posted comments, I have the genuine Lowner gauge for measuring belt tension but never use it. Ok you can only use it on the horizontal belt on 2v because the frame is in the way on the vertical, but on my 748 I tried it out when I did my first belt change and to be honest I prefer to use the push up or pull down method on the 4v (stretta engine pictured but same for desmoquattro) and the said allen key method on Louises M750. 5 belt changes so far with no problems.

I know about the 5mm and 6mm alan key method .... was just wondering if we had a Ducati service tech out there who gets the updates from Ducati.

I set them up using the freq method but got fed up with the constant doing up/ undoing the tensioner bolts as it was very fiddly. In the end just used the alan key.
