ive just started fitting a new chain and sprocket kit to my monster.(1994 900) i took the old front sprocket off, the step was to the inside. i went to fit the new one and the threaded holes on the new sprocket are not threaded all the way through on the flat (outer side). Could anyone tell me which way the sprocket should be on.

cheers Gary

Fit the same as the one you took off, as otherwise the chain wont align correctly with the rear sprocket :)

same as the one that came off

the smaller engines the 750 and 600 have a (as standard) thinner sprocket 520 on the other way round

having said that i think there is some oddness about the 900 and sprockets

so long as the chain and sprockets line up in a straight line your ok

if i fit it the same as the one i took off, i have to get the holes threaded. ill look for a tap, or get back to b and c

you are right Scottie - its the late carbie/early ie models (about early 2001 bikes)

has anybody got a picture or drawing of the sprocket in place?

cheers Gary

Think you might have the wrong sprocket if it doesn't look like the one you took off!

it looks the same just the holes where the sprocket att ring bolts on are not threaded all the way throught. and i cant screw in the cap screws. The sprocket is hardened and the tap i tried wouldnt cut a thread

longer bolts

if the bolts wont start on the thread how would longer bolts help ?

Assuming the steps on the inside it should be good if it's the same size as the one you took off.
The threads being short is a real pain. Worst case you could use shorter bolts as all they do is hold the retainer plate in place. There isn't much in the way of lateral forces (side to side wiggles) on the sprocket as long as the chain lines up OK. You'll usually have some rotational play after a few hundfred miles, often even straight after a new sprocket. Some thread lock on the nuts should hold them OK. IF you want extra security wire them in.
Wise idea with shorter bolts would be fresh ones as they'll have streched a teensy bit after the initial torquing.

OHHHHHHHH No thread on the OUTSIDE !!!
You need another sprocket then, check it is the right one though

thankyou very much for that bit of info, if the step goes on the inside then i have a faulty sprocket. this is the way the sprocket came off but i wanted to be sure. i'll get back to b and c .

thankyou for all your help everyone.

Hey Inchman

I'd agree when you say you have a duff sprocket - my 93 900 has the boss on the inside
