Just been having a fiddle in the garage (with the bike, I hasten to add) as a ride is out of the question thanks to overnight snow. Any road up, there is a microswitch on the underneath of the clutch lever. What's it for?

To stop you turning the starter with the bike in gear and clutch engaged?

That would make sense, thanks! I remember a friend with a Yamaha RD 200 which was one of the first to feature an electric start (I think) in the mid 70's. He started the bike on its side stand, it was in gear, it leapt forward and he ended up under it in his desperation to save it!

Don't assume it's working correctly unless you've tested it yourself.

What do you suggest as a 'safe' way to test it?

I'd go for sitting on the bike, brake on, nothing in front of me, myself.
