My S4 has ignition coils built into the plug leads, I think other models like the S4R and the 999 have the same arrangement. My Ducati dealer told me that you cant buy the coils seperatley from the rest of the (£499) wiring room as its all one part!????!
Now, these stick coils are made by Denso the Japanese electrics giant and look similar to ones fitted to the Honda CBR600 VFR800 the R6 KTM 950 etc etc.

Has anyone tried fitting an alternative stick coil to a monster if so which one ?

you can buy the coils separate at approx £100 a piece

a random bike shop who deals with all other manner or bikes (local to me) said "nah main dealer for that" or words to that effect, however I'm quite sure that it's not exclusive to a monster S4

Load of old tosh!! I had my S4 coils replaced by Proteam in Wimbledon at about £90ish pounds each. It was a couple of years ago so I can't remember the exact price but it was definitely below £100. They're trying to rob you if they say that because, if I remember rightly, the coils don't even have a lead attached, they use the existing lead and cap to plug into the coil, which in turn plugs into the sparkplug. I'd ring another Ducati dealer as they'll quite happily sell you the coils on their own if it means they're getting the business. :D

Yeah, exactly they just clip on the end of the loom. Thanks for confirming that!

I havent tried any yet, I was hoping that someone could advise me. Looking on ebay I can see that they are all made by Denso for different manufacturers but I guess length and electrical output varies between models of engine.

There are no pattern Coils for S4 its Denso only and they have to be the right length , £90 is about right for one .

so Apprillia Mille ones will fit CK & AK that is good news if they are cheaper,

Nippon Denso dont seem to have many options for stick coil replacements My Nissan car uses 6 and they fail often a £50 each.

Thanks for the advice guys! I took a punt on a CBR600 coil on ebay £16 and its exactly the same size just swop the rubbers over. The resistance through the coil is a bit more than it should be but it fires up fine. Ill see how it goes.

be careful, if the resistance is higher you could damage the rest of the system, like the ecu etc and then that starts getting costly.........
All the coils are built to a set resistance - are the part numbers the same?

Of course it could be that your old coils had lowered their resistance & thats why they didnt work properly :)

Can you let us know how this went, I have seen CBR coils on Ebay but am worried about blowing the Computer if the reistance is different. My S4 has a poor idle when warm as if it keeps trying to run on 1 pot intermittantly and I dont want to fork out £100 if it does not fix the fault.

cheers.

I have a spare one I got when I bought a pair. I wont sell it cheap as I may need it one day but will accept half price of new as what I paid. £50 postage inc as long as not abroad.

does that mean that they work and fit with no problems?

Cheers for that, I have a mate with a CBR 600, will twist his arm until he lends me one so I can find out if it fixes my problem.

Got one off Ebay for a tenner, (cbr600) works a treat but was about 3/4 inch too long so have hiden it on the back cylinder under the tank.
