Hi Monster owners....

Details for this years big V-twin festival have now been finalised. We had fantastic support from the Ducati clubs in 2006 and 2007 (shame about the floods!) and hope for the same this year.

UKBEG Emma Radford Memorial Buell & European V-twin Festival - Saturday 19th July 2008

Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre
East Kirkby, near Spilsby
Lincolnshire
PE23 4DE
Web site: www.lincsaviation.co.uk

UK Buell Enthusiasts Group web site: www.ukbeg.com

This will be our fifth event at this location dedicated to the memory of one of our members, Emma Jane Radford, who passed away 22-04-04, aged just 26. We’ll also be raising money for the Papworth Hospital Cystic Fibrosis unit which looked after Emma. Last year we had 130+ bikes and raised over £1100.00.

In addition to approx. 150 Buells, there’ll be Italian bikes from Aprilia, Cagiva, Ducati, Morini and Moto Guzzi. British bikes will include Brough Superior, Hesketh and Vincent.

Buell UK will support the event and will have a selection of their current Buell range available for escorted test rides around the stunning Lincolnshire Wolds. You must produce a full motorcycle licence if you wish to have a test ride.

The event will include a Lancaster bomber taxi-run and a Spitfire flying display. If you like Rolls Royce V12 Merlin engines at full chat and red-blooded V-twin motorcycles, you’ll really appreciate this event!

The provisional timetable is as follows:
10.30 am Start time
12.00 noon to 1.00 pm Photo-call for bikes with the Lancaster
1.30 pm Lancaster bomber taxi-run
2.30/3.00 pm Spitfire flying display
4.00 pm Lancaster bomber taxi-run

The admission charge is £6.00 per person. ‘Girls on Buells’ get in free.

The Aviation Centre has full catering facilities.

Yay!

This is quite a remarkable event if you haven't done this before. Please go. The facilities are tremendous and the atmosphere amazing. I find the place fascinating and it's for a very worthwhile cause.

Please support.

I too endorse this event for many of the same and other reasons :) Little Em has a habbit of sitting on thunder clouds this day, so Em if you can hear me, bring back the bloody sun or we'll all turn up with panniers on just to annoy you! :D :D

Didn't go last year, the weather was just too crap to even contemplate it. Attended the year before & was subjected to a horrendous thunderstrom over the Lincolnshire Wolds on the way down. Sun shone later though. There were some lovely Vincents there to oggle. The undoubted highlight was the sight & sound of the Spitfire though. I'm no 'plane freak but it genuinely brought a lump to the throat & a moist eye to see. The atmosphere is utterly unmissable, especially the Naafi-like tea room! The Lancaster taxi run was disappointing but not half as much as for the poor sods that had paid serious money to climb aboard! :fou: Hope to be there this year though!
Highly recommended event!

Hi Benson - thanks for the welcome message.

You'd think that July would guarantee good weather but Emma always seems to have the last laugh. I have a cunning plan for 2008 though

Do you still have your Buell?

Regards, Chris.

I'll hopefully be there this year. I missed last years. '06 made for an interesting (and moist) ride there and back but there was glorious sunshine all day during the event itself. Best of all, the Spitty pilot gave it the berries for the display and gave one of the best show flights I've ever seen. :D

Hi Chris yes I still have the Buell so it'll be a toss up on the day which gets the ride!!! Hope you and the wife are both well and happy on two wheels,

16-01-2008, 10:14 PM
Or just plain common sense on the part of those wishing to go in terms of meeting somewhere en route!!!

Seriously - the ride ins usually happen because regional folk take the lead - I will be posting up about a London/Essex run in - the rest is of course up to those wishing to go - feel free to do some organising yourself too!!!

You won't be disappointed - they are a LOT of fun - I've only just got back from a quick commute to work on mine (a city x) and I'm smiling even thought I had to go via the north circular - they are lovely bikes and just make you giggle.....ENJOY!!!!

Paranoid Dave

you'll love the event too, if you've not been to this before you have to go. There are only two flying lancasters in the world, one in the uk used in the battle of britain flights and another in canada i believe. This is the third! It can fly and would fly if allowed and the museum and its fanatical supporters are trying to get it back in the air :D This aint no air show, this is the most stunning wartime lady in all her glory at very close quarters, firing up 4 of those merlin engines and blowing wind in your face.

benson

So - who's going then? Time to start putting this into the regional threads perhaps to see if we can organise a ride in en masse???

Just be careful Mr Snips - just what is all this Buell prejudice about then huh huh huh???

Hmmm, prejudice is not a great trait, I admit, but it all starts with the "Harley Davidson" thing.

I *really* don't like Harleys, and all that goes with them. I'm just grateful that the leather tassles, sissy seats and stars-and-stripes bandanas are all conveniently grouped with Harley's (how awful would be be if that stuff was all associated with Ducatis? ;) ).

Anyway, being an engineer, I really do like the idea of a fresh design approach being taken to the motorcycle, low centre of gravity, and clever solutions contributing to an overall design. So... I then feel aggrieved that all that goods stuff was applied to a design based around something as backward as a Harley-engine, rather than something equally forward-thinking.

It seems a contradiction to base innovative design around a backward engine. It would be like applying the iPhone user interface to two tin cans connected by a piece of string ;)

I also hear that Buells really are very unreliable.

I admit my overall opinion is based on ignorance rather than fact (hence a prejudice), so attending this show will be good to confront that, and at the very least base my dislike of Buells on some facts ;)

I will be going - leaving from Rugby. I don't mind going out of my way to meet up somewhere.

Snips, I thought all the same things about Ducatis before I got one. Apart from the tassles etc. Now I ride a retro bike with an backward engine :-) which, when it was introduced, was revolutionary, and which is unreliable (two oil leaks in < 6000 miles). I still love it though. This summer I will also be test riding a 2008 GSX-R 750 to get a fix of up to date technology.

PS This isn't a dig or a troll or anything - just making conversation :-)

:)

I like to consider the desmodromic engine a branch in engine-design, rather than a dead-end :)

benson
02-07-2008, 08:12 PM
Well I'll be on my backwards bike all being well - which dare I say it has been amazingly reliable - in the 2 1/2 years I've had it it's started every time, never had a call out or a problem (oh god instant kiss of death...) and has always made me smile. The simplicity of the engine is actually part of the appeal to me - alongside some interesting ideas about centre of mass and most of all the fact that it corners like its on rails and looks like it's been on a hot wash!!!

See, I told you the weather would be good this year.......

If you're arriving in a group of 2 or more bikes would you please collect all your entrance money together before you arrive. It will help us on the gate and it means that only one of you will be fumbling for soggy banknotes....

Entrance costs £6 per adult, £3 per child, but 'Girls on Buells' get in free.

Thank you!!

benson
18-07-2008, 12:46 PM
Well I'll be a girl on a Buell so hopefully I can spend my entrance money in a charity tin!!! Really hoping the weather holds out - sharp showers and gusty wind so say the BBC...Hell - it's July so it's bound to rain (again)...

Just got home after a cracking ride there with PD and Puddinghead, heading in from Ipswich and then home again, having waved farewell to the two fellow cake hunters at Kings Lyn.

A grand day of rain dodging we have accomplished not to mention the hearing loss from the Lancaster engines! What an amazing plane...

The sun shone pretty much all the time thank goodness too

Thanks PD and PH for letting me stay and if anyone fancies a run to Parkinson's tomorrow let me know - I think you know what I mean PH!!

Off to put the kettle on and lament lime and coconut drizzle cake...

250 miles in a day is enough, a good ride, good friends and mainly sun. A sad day too and that cloud above has just gained another occupant spectating on the days events. We've been thinking of little else tonight.

A friend of mine from Finland went there on his Buell and won the price for the longest distance travelled. Probably would have won the dirtiest bike one, too, had there been one...

Apparently 106 Buells made it, compared to about 60 last year. Still some way to go before they match the Bristol Italian Auto & Moto festival numbers that we do.

As PD mentioned in his thread there was a tragic loss of life today on the journey to the airfield - Darren, or Yoffi as he was known on the UK Buell forum was killed in a collision. Yoffi was to the forum a real key player - an all round great guy - he sold me my Buell and he couldn't have been a nicer, funnier and more generous hearted guy. DG20, the dealership in Southampton, will be a much quieter place. Darren leaves behind a his wife and two young children and I know all our condolences are with them at this truly awful time.

Ride safe everyone - we really don't know what each day will bring...

Just got back from this event today and it was good to finally meet you PD.
Paivi, Timo from Finland rode down with me from Edinburgh and we both stayed at a Motel just along the road from the event.
It was a really good weekend but also a lot of sadness.

A good day out. Didn't hook up with any other UKMOCers but had a great ride there (dodging the showers), had brekkie at lunchtime, watched the Lanc, rode a Buell, went the long way home. Met some great folks (Hi Suezuki). Here is one of my pics that sums it up.

I'd like to thank all of the Ducati Monster Club members that attended on Saturday - all at UKBEG really do appreciate the effort your club made.

It was the most successful event we've held there and approx. 100 Italian bikes attended.

Sadly, one of our members was killed on his way to the event. RIP Darren.
