Wise ones? You may have the wrong Forum

Have done a bit of trail riding and think you can't go far wrong with Yam XT's always favoured by long distance off road types, Suzuki DR350's although not many around these days or Honda XR's, used by lots of companies running off road trips.

Not sure of prices etc but it's a start.

Hope this helps
Cheers

Depends what you want.
Suzuki dr's, and Honda xr's go on forever and old ones are cheap.
Early Yamaha TTRs are similar and have the benefit of electric start.
Honda CRM was the best true trail bike (as opposed to enduro bike)
I ever owned. Felt nice and light, very torquey, autolube not messy pre mix and still got a nice two stroke top end rush.

i dont think you can go wrong with the drz400. the E is faster than the S.

i love my ktm but the drz we have is great to work on and will go on for ever and ever. its cheap as well.

The above advice is good BUT remember

XR have only kick start (unless you get a 250 import)
The DRZ400 are electris start and boy you'll want it in the heat of africa!

Go for simple and survivable.
Four strokes probably best as you'll actually get some miles per gallon. Plus no need for super synthetic 2T oil.
Water cooling would be nice if you can afford that 'new'
XR's are ok, some hot start issues on standard carb though. Handlings plush rather than race, gets upset when hustled. Tough motor based on 350 single so under stressed.
Yam XT 600ish all pretty much bomb proof.
Aprillia Tuareg, (pegaso precursor) old but handles and tough rotax mill.
TTR's nice little bike, slightly better handling than bog XRs. Motor not as tough as XR's as it's built to that size but hard to break.

Stormie (on here) has the perfect trail bike, Ive owned 1 as well, the Yamaha XT225 Serow. Great little bike. I can also recommend the Yamaha XT350, another good bike for little money, kickstart only though whereas the 225 has leccy start and kick.

Can we now join the UKMOC off roaders 'club'?

I've got a very thirsty KMX200:banghead:

Cheers

The lad at our local cafe has a WR425 and rides the ar5e off it everywhere keeping up with his mates on their 600s and he absolutely loves it. It is a kick start one though and it was a sod to start until he got the hang of it. There is a conversion kit apparantly to turn it into an electric start but he's too tight to buy it!
