View Full Version : Is it possible to increase tank capacity ?

Given that I can only get 80-100 miles from a tank of fuel has anyone ever tried to change the capacity of a tank in some way ?
Maybe weld another bit to the underside of the tank. As I've got an open airbox there's a little more space now, could I use that space?

When I was making noises a while ago, it was suggested that I look into having a larger tank made. If two of us look at it, we might be able to bring the price down?

What about if I order 5 ? just to get a discount, do you reckon I could use the rest for beer transportation ??
And surely a new tank would be more than altering the current one?

no you cant use the 'space' under the tank less you want to mess about with the fueling side of things

i wouldn't have minded a larger capacity tank in the past but the chance to stretch your legs every 100 odd miles appeals to me more these days

i dunno about the injected models, but the carb models could have the bottom of the tank removed and replaced with nearly a flat piece of plate. i would guess this would give nearly a gallon of extra fuel.
give http://www.thetankshop.com/ a call, their prices are very good

find a shop that specialises in custom bikes / and or tanks and either get the tank modified or a new one made

getting a larger tank is no problem

making it look right is a bit more difficult

The space you mention is effectively the airbox so filling it with "extra fuel tank" would cause some running issues.

Worse case is that you get a metal fuel flask from a camping shop that holds a litre for emergencies

Get it 'blown out'. A lot of race bike have had this done. Re-work the airbox and it should free up more space. Better still, use filters on each carb and jet them accordingly.

You could make one that is slightly higher and a tadge wider, not by much but it would look superb.

Lightweight as well, a supersexy alloy tank!!!!! The only down sides are the build time and its in scotland!

coo - they are stunning. Come on JP, you know it makes sense! 5mm bigger in every direction should give us a reasonable increase in capacity without looking different in any way.

Now, where's that Orange monstrosity Neil put up a while ago?
