considering having the frame and wheels done in red as opposed to that greyey finish , red has to match the bike so I think powder coating is out unless I pay for the powder specially making up to match? Anyone done the same, powder or paint and if so can you recommend anyone?

Alas the frame is steel so not possible. I say yes as its a future project for mine too but with black wheels and swingarm. Go for it.

they even do chrome powder coating, the only company to do it propely apperently.. saw some wheels done, you would be hard pressed to see that they werent really chrome plated

My bike is an 04 model S4R, was originally grey frame and swingarm. Both have been painted (red and black respectively). Paint is fine providing they etch prime before. I had it done by a cowboy first time and it chip easily. Definitely check out the workmanship and previous work before you commit.

Next time (I'm sure there will be) I'll go the powder coating route on the frame and swingarm and ordering the powder in the colour I want. I think it is still more durable than paint.

Shaun I think your bike looks fantastic as it is :hail: but if you are going to paint it, black wheels would look better than red.

What coating is that on the engine cases?

Scotty

special coating as used on magnesium alloy engine cases

which on the water pump side id have to question the sanity of for a road bike , i remember seeing a used one on ebay once and it had started to corrode away to nothing very much a race part with a short life unless your running 100% glycol as coolent or something odd ?

Have tried these but the one of cost just for the powder to match is £250, been quoted £250 for painting, guess what I should do is see if one the standard powder reds will match, only £100 then for the frame powder coating.

My wheel hubs use to be gold but changed them to black, and I think they look better

In the case of my covers, they are painted. Older DP Magnesium parts (for the 916-996 range) have too much inconsistency with their colour. Some even have a slight green tinge, and the colour is not even. I decided to paint the standard cases for a better result.

Where did you get your cam belt covers? Are the 996 ones the same as 999 / testa?

Jerry

The covers are bespoke, custom job.

999 covers are different to 996, testa heads were redesigned with steeper valves and narrower heads.

Shaun

The wheels are Dymag, carbon rims fitted to a mag hub. They came standard in gold but I sent them back to Dymag to paint black (powder coated).
