The Ducati.com parts catalogues is a great source of info but looking for bits for my bike I find parts that look identical (e.g. clutch cover for a monster 750) only to find the part number is slightly different.
e.g.
2000 750 clutch cover 243.2.028.1AB

2005 S2R clutch cover 243.2.028.5AC

The parts look the same, the internals are the same part numbers so why is the cover a different part number? I wonder if the last 3 characters indicate colour or decals or maybe embossed info on the part?

Is it possible to decipher the 4 "sub part" numbers and as you move from left to right does the significance of the character decrease?

I have 2 Ducatis an S4 and M750 i also have parts books for both as well as 998 and 916 . when i look up identical parts for all 4 models the parts number is usually different ....... I guess its an ITALIEN thing! the dealers also know this problem well a good parts man is essential asan idiot will tell u they dont have a part for your bike when in fact they do if he knew how to search the parts lists.

The same part can have different part number depending on the the bike. Hence ducati can charge to prices for it.

Monster and 916 barends being an example.

well, I'm about to test the system 'cos I bought a monster 800 clutch cover from the states on ebay so we'll see whether it fits the s2r.

Thanks to all for posts and comments

Difference of someone accepting there is a problem and another not.

basically the different part nos are due to different colours usually or other subtle differences. i know most engine parts are interchangeable but the ones for the specific bike may have had a slight mod to fit that particular bike. ie nearly all clutch pressure plates are the same and clutch covers also but casings even tho the look the same may have been slighly beefed up in certain areas for a specific application

forse Ducati merda di torro?:chuckle:

but seriously, at least Ducati have the decency to make the parts listings available which is really useful whereas, apart from Kawasaki, other manufacturers seem to think keeping it a secret is wtg

merda di torro is a litteral translation
