View Full Version : Should I give up on this bike ? ?

Just starting work on my M900.

I noticed the bike seems to lean over to far when on sidestand. So I give it a wiggle and it seems loose.

Heres what I found. What a bodge job! Looks like accident damage that has been repaired.

Just spent £100 on parts... Gutted?

What do you think? Any Ideas? Is it a hopeless case?

That takes the whole weight of the bike when on the stand.

You could get it welded & re-tapped but the engine will prob have to come out to do it - due to the heat generated by the welding of that large area, and prob have to remove the internals as well to do this.

Or, maybe you could get an engineering shop to make you an elaborate bracket to fit to the 2 other holes?

Otherwise - its off to the breakers to locate a replacement casing or even engine:(

In the mean time - its easiest is to find a wall when you stop, to lean the bike on.... (have known several to do this when the stand has snapped!)

I was going to suggest fitting a centre stand kit as a temp fix, but sods law dictates it would use the same holes to mount to? As CK said an in-situ repair is a non starter. Engine will need to come out and posibly be stripped to weld and re-drill the hole.

Cheers for the input. It's as I thought then.

One bolt does go into the engine as it should and the stand is also held by the dodgy extra bolt thats been put into the plate thing. So I could leave it. But one day I'll stop, stick the stand out, try to get off and end up with a bike on my leg :(

I'd be happy going to centre stand. Anyone know what holes they do use. I have seens a couple of pictures now and it looks like they may use a different pair of holes to the side stand.

Would it be possible to fit a heliocoil?

I thought the stand only used the bottom two holes. If thats the case and you don't carry pillions then get a set of solo rearsets as they mount on the upper mounts (out of picture). Then you get two new bolts and bolt the stand in as normal (with loctite).

I know this is the wrong side but you can see where the rearsets mount into the upper mounting points only:

Cheers Bodybag,

I do like the look of the rearsets but I'm afraid the stand on mine does use the top bolt hole. If yours is different then maybe a later stand could solve the problem. Do you have a picture of the other side of the bike? Would be good to see.

Thanks
Eddie

I haven't I'm afraid as he's in a garage to be sold. You could always get a mounting plate manufactured that uses the bottom two holes instead of the top if I'm wrong about which holes are used.

I don't think fitting rearsets solves the problem of the sidestand? The stand still has to be bolted to the damaged holes in the crankcase, regardles of the standard peg hangers being swapped for rearsets.

It's also possible the centerstand kit uses the same damaged bolt holes for fixing. Maybe an UKMOCer that's fitted one can offer some advice?

I have seen a centre stand for sale on an amercan forum archive. Looks like it uses the back two bolts instead of the top and lower middle. I'll give the dealer a call tomorrow. But if anyone does know I'd be happy to hear.

Cheers again
Eddie

What sort of stand does yours have Gary ;)

But seriously thanks again mate.

Any competent machine shop should be able to make a heavier plate up to fasten your bits to, using the mounting holes other than the broken one. Get it done in stainless for bling. The broken one could be ground out, roughened up (to provide a key) and built back up with some Belzona Molecular Metal. (chemical epoxy type stuff but that brief description doesn't do it justice) This can then be drilled, tapped, machined etc. to provide the remaing hole.

Belzona are just down the road from me and in the past I have used their stuff for all sorts of repairs.

Walls are a good alternative though - cheap, easy and generally available anywhere, all shapes, sizes, colours too.

Trolly jack & a pair of axel stands?

Sold the side stand - seemed a bit pointless leaving it on :p
