Maybe this is more of a question for the dd racers out there, all the later bikes have oil coolers but my old M600 doesn't, as i'm uping the cc over winter would it be worth fitting one and can they be fitted to the older 583 bikes?????

My thinking is going along the lines of bigger cc more heat, hotter oil no increase in surface area to get rid of said heat

The danger of fitting an oil cooler to a bike not intended to have one is that the oil will stay too cool. Perhaps if you are racing it then it might be a good idea but for a road bike i would say don't bother.

Have put oil coolers on both bikes (583 & 620), purely because of the extreme temps that the engines would get up to when racing.
Have NEVER had the temp of any monster road bike getting up to the race bike temps we achieve - even on a v v hot day.

How much cc were you planning on going up?
If only a BB 675 kit, then I wouldnt bother with an oil cooler, unless you are going to be banging the living daylights out of the bike on hot trackdays next year. The 675 'kit' will only give you about 2 - 5 hp increase overall, but will increase the mid range quite well (far more fun in cornering :D )
Better to save money & put to other mods for the bike (uprating suspension/forks etc) - but only my thoughts tho:dunce:

Thanks both

Yep its the BB kit and i'll maybe be doing the UKMOC trackday but thats it, the rest will be on the road so i'll not bother with this one and save me money for other fancy stuff

We fitted a oil cooler to the 620, it was available as a add on kit in the catologue. We were seeing temps of over 130 on the clocks whilst touring one year in France, which we are told is not a issue. But talking with a mate who is a mechanical engineer and a rally driver I came to the conclusion it would be worth fitting as it would help to keep the temp lower and help the engine live longer as working temperatures would be better. That was 3 years ago and its still running fine.

Thats the sort of line i was thinking of, but based on the advice of C from CK & AK fame i may not need one.

I'm going to fit an oil temp gauge if i can at the same time as the morph, see whats its doing after a few rides and take it from there.

My mates thoughts were simple. And seeing what he did with a mark one escort and a rs2000 engine he knew more about the inside of engines and what makes them tick than i ever will. the statement you could eat your dinner off it was so true.

Depends if he's running a finned sump and the water cooling system is running at it's max. Mine had a laminova cooler on it and made no difference when I removed it.

But then I did run an oil thermostat. Too cold oil also damages an engine.

When we investigated about it, we reckoned at max it would only knock it down 8 to 10 degrees, just enought to get temp in the range we were happy with when touring, to be honest I preffered to have the radiator fitted anyway as all the oil cooled bikes I have had over the years had them as standard. It was when in France touring in that we were a little concerned about the temps, so paid the money bought the kit and fitted it myself. Don't think we are going to the artic so can't see it ever running cold enought to cause damage.
