Anyone up for a long ride on Sunday? Weather forecast is promising & it might be the last chance in 2006! Maybe Eastern Dales - Leyburn, Ripon Masham etc?

Hi,

I'm at the extreme north of Yorkshire...Guisborough way...any chance of a route that comes that far north? Either way, if the weather is fine, I'm up for it.

Young Richard Nambduke is at university now, so he won't hold anyone up with his b****y Superdream! Anyway, he's thrashed it within an inch of it's life and the head gasket has blown.....he'll teach him to look after his toys!

Let me know where you'll be heading and what time....I'll try and get there...

Regards,
Mark Nambduke

I could be persuaded to play out - also we have a contact now in Scarborough, 916 owner who also happens to have a cafe..........good lunch stop? If you're heading over from Brough how's about we all meet up at Scotch Corner, the truck stop layby just after the roundabout (western bound side). About central for all and easy to get to as well.

rockjock620

or perhaps Hawes, Penny Garth Cafe? I know the roads really well around here if you need any info.

I thought York, Knaresborough, Pately Bridge, Kettlewell, Aysgarth, Leyburn, Bedale, Northallerton, Stokesley, Helmsley, York. If you know of a decent stop for a spot of tiffin on the way, suggestions welcome!

I've just checked the mileage for this jaunt and it's 218!!!! Probably a bit too far! Time for a rethink!

Well, i'm up for it, depending on the time. I'm on a night shift the night before, but if i get the chance to have a few hours kip then i could join ya later on

Right, revised route!

Home, York, Helmsley (tea/bacon butty?) at the cafe in the square, Stokesley, Guisborough (is that where Guy of was from?), Whitby (fish & chips?) Scarborough (tea), Driffield, Home. 190 miles.

Anyone care to join me for all or part of my epic journey? Subject to dry weather of course!

Bloody hell! I've just realised that's only 28 miles less than the original! I think I need a lie down!

It's not worth getting out if you don't at least two tankfuls of gas! If you do Knaresborough to Pateley Bridge you're missing out the A6108 to Leyburn - that is one of the best there is! I can show you round this neck of the woods if you want. But it's your ride, so I'll tag along. Time? Duration?

bigredduke
12-10-2006, 07:34 PM
OK, I would be happy to take that route. It will take me about an hour & a half to get to Harrogate so I guess I could be there for about 10.30/11ish. Where do you suggest for a bite to eat?

rockjock620
12-10-2006, 07:49 PM
An hour and a half? What the **** are you riding? It's only 30 miles to York Ring Road, via Market Weighton, Wilberfoss, then another 20 miles to Harrygut! I can meet you at, say, the Copmanthorpe/Askham Bryan junction of the A64/A1237. That's easy to find and we can run through from there. Bring some buddies too.

How is Helmsley for coppers at the moment? (Just thinking about my cans)

Your cans are not the ones I'd be thinking of......:D If you don't stop, they won't have a chance........:D That's one reason why I tend to avoid it. How about the junction I mentioned, where we met Mac for the Fish Buttie runs to Brid?

Good evening all!!

Weather forecast looks good.....fingers crossed....

Route looks good. I can trundle down to York, about 50miles to meet up initially, join you on the run through to Helmsley, Stokesley, Guisborough then through to Whitby....we'll have 2 alternatives from Guisborough to Whitby, either the moor road, or the coast road. Both end up at the same point approx going into Whitby. From Whitby, I'd return to Guisborough either on the Moor or Coast road depending on which one we used to Whitby??!!

Mmmmmm.....police at Helmsley....suspect they'll be out in force, but they usually are at the beginning and end of the season....Last time I was there, hi level remus titanium....not even a look.....depending on how we arrive and leave, we should be ok. I'll check with my brother (copper, but don't let that put you off) to see if he knows any intelligence...he might from traffic??

So, where can I meet you at York and at what time??

PS bigredduke...I'll PM you my mobile number number later once run confirmed so I don't miss you at York.....

Regards,
Mark Nambduke

Come on guys....what's the route??

Thought the route bigredduke mentioned was good to pick up a number of the group. The roads to and from Helsmley are some of the best in NYorks and the rest of the country.....

So....what's the consensus? Am I riding out alone again?? Billy Nomates of NYorks?

pass the cheese!:D

Ok, executive decision! How about meeting as agreed, then Harrogate, Ripon, Leyburn, Northallerton, Thirsk. At Thirsk we can decide if some or all of us want to go on to Helmsley & Stokesley et al or call it a day, it would be a convenient point for most of us.

rockjock620
13-10-2006, 05:56 PM
OK I can run you through Harrogate (the twisty back way :mand: ) and up to Leyburn - that's great riding and easy route finding. Where do you want to scoff? Masham has a decent biker's cafe/brekkie stop in the market place. Or Leyburn? Both have toilet stops too. Or if you are really, really, keen to eat early, we could always go to Betty's Tearooms in Harrogate.

Yorkie

Leyburn or Masham depending on the time would be good. I would imagine Betty's would really appreciate a bunch of bikers in leathers sitting down to a cup of tea (little finger extended of course) and a fat rascal!

I envisaged meeting at York about 10/10.30. Is that OK for everyone?

Just a thought BigRed - if we stop at Leyburn (nambduke could get there rather than Thirsk?) then it is an easy choice - East or West. Weather might be better one way rather than the other. I know lots of routes either way.

bigredduke
14-10-2006, 08:27 AM
At the moment, East looks like it's going to get the better weather, according to Metcheck.com anyway!

Daft question
Which end off the A1237 as it joins the A64 in two places.
I automaticaly thought the end at the south of york as my folks are only a couple of miles down the road from there,as your coming from the north do you meen the junction near Stockton on the forest?

There told you it was daft!

Start time is fine, but there is NO WAY we'll make Leyburn by 11! Not on the fun stuff anyway. Best route will be Wetherby via Rufforth, Harrogate via Spofforth, Leyburn via Ripon and Masham. ETA Leyburn 1145 and that will be caning it! If you want to go that way, rather than the A1  More like 1200, to be honest. I have done Harrogate to Leyburn in 30 minutes and I know that road well. It's good fun though.

Nice to see you all if only fleetingly! That bloody police car followed me all the way to Knaresborough and with my slightly smaller than regulation number plate and slightly louder than standard exhaust, I didn't want to give him an excuse to stop me!

Any road up, met Nambduke in Leyburn and had some nice nosh in the tearoom there. Then we headed for Helmsley & lost each other in Bedale!. Met up later & had another cup of tea & a natter before heading home (hope you got home safely Mark).

Maybe next time we could organise a definite route with stops for the captain slows amongst us! That is unless you were hoping to lose me at some stage!

We spotted Yorkie & co through Leyburn while we were in the cafe and Nambduke shot out to flag you down but without success!

An enjoyable day nonetheless! Apart from the crap on the roads 'courtesy' of our farming friends. God, there was loads of it, good job it was dry!

15-10-2006, 05:36 PM
We stopped in the carpark to see if we could spot you! Nuts!!

The copcar was a pain thats why i pulled off the 168 and headed down the A1 and met up with the rest at Boroughbridge!

More meet up points would be great, or at least wait a junctions! Ther were more coppers when we came back one Scooby (White and marked up) had pulled an R1 and a BMW (Silver and marked up) was following another couple of bikers all heading towards Hawes!

You really would think they would have more useful things to do with their time. That said, on my way back for Malton, Iwas passed by 4 or 5 sportsbikes on blind bends and brows of hills where they couldn't possibly see anything coming the other way. Nutters!

Trouble is, we all get lumped together as far as plod is concerned.

I was running down the road with my serviette tucked into the top of my jumper! The locals thought I was a numpty whistling as loud as I could....must be your loud cans!! Anyway, the roast beef and yorkshire pudding was great! Have to confess, I had another sunday dinner when I got home!

Agree/Echo when talking about stop points...between bigredduke and I, we managed to loose each other, but a quick call meant we knew we we heading to Helmsley. We suggested a piece of string between us......mmmmm....bearing in mind, we both had mobile phones, both had sat navs, one speed camera detector........let's agree stop points in future

So ended up in Helmsley, where we were accosted by an elderly gentleman on a BMW 1200RT (A ruddy big thing...the bike that is) who then tagged himself onto bigredduke and told him about a biking holiday that takes in 5 countries in a week....he even had the bl**dy brochures in his top box!!! PS, if anyone wants a copy, I have a brochure as well....LOL

Anyway, another cup of tea followed, then bigreduke headed to Pickering, I headed off towards Stokesley.

Fingers crossed for some better weather in the coming weeks.....we might just squeeze another run in before the winter arrives!!!

Mark Nambduke

At Hawes we waited for MartinH then the four of us shot up to Kirkby Stephen(Scotty, Martin, my mate and I) then Brough to Middleton, Alston and Hartside for more nosh. Then Scotty headed back east as the Three Musketeers headed west down the A66 to Keswick, ****ermouth, Egremont and the west coast road down toward Barrow, before cutting back east to Kendal, Devil's, A65 then Skipton, Blubberhouse Moor and home for about 7.30. Good to meet you all, briefly. As I said it's not a proper ride unless someone gets lost! And that happened a lot today. Next time, next time........

Think satnav, a pocket map, or just get out a bit more while looking at the odd road sign might help!

Planned to turn off at Ferrybridge on the A1 and take the A19 back, ended going through Wakefield on the A638........what was I saying about a map:mand:
