No, not a wind up. I think Hammond is a very personable bloke so this is not good news.

Sad news. The video clip says he was regaining consciousness at hospital but still critical so hopefully that’s a good sign.

BBC1 news are going to have an update before the end of the programme, hopefully they can tell us a bit more.

Doesn't sound too good though does it..........:(

Thats sucks, top bloke :(

[Edit] Second thoughts: At least he's alive, and in hospital, hope he'll be ok

BBC Site now says "seriously hurt" instead of critical. Also says he's stable. Fingers crossed.

Sounds like it'll be ok, unless something unexpected happens. Just keep fingers crossed that he makes a full recovery, would be horrible if he has permanent injuries :(

I heard the news earlier and it came as a shock.

I have a lot of contact with staff at the LGI through my work and tried to get some news on his condition but without much luck this evening.

I hope he gets well soon

The Radio 2 news said he was stable this morning at least...

Seems he was attempting the British Land Speed record (300+ mph)... the loon!

Get well soon, the Hamster. We need someone on Top Gear to balance out the ugly mugs of Clarkson and May...

This is the first I heard - really is not good at all, he is a top guy and a true enthusiast, and one of very few in the media that is a true car and bike nut, and our hobby needs people like him.

I would join with the rest in wishing him a speedy recovery, and my thoughts go out to his family.

Lets hope he makes a full recovery soon! the news seems to suggest that he is "improving" and that Mr Clarkson has visited him!

Looks like the car he was driving was the "Vampire" a jet dragster that has been seen at Santa Pod and other strips since the late 90's! Roll overs at 250mph + happen quite a bit in the drag racing world and the roll cages are extremely strong but its bound to give you a huge shaking! Ive seen many drag cars end up in the field at the end of the strip!

Best wishes to the "Hampster" and his family

Apparently someone at work said he had actually broken the record and just went again for filming purposes!!

I hope he recovers as he does seem to be a really down to earth bloke. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.

I am obviously very concerned for Bensons alter ego. I am hopeful they haven't messed up identities.

Richard, should you ever get this message, I'm the one who told Jeremy Clarkson when I met him in the Alps with a Bugatti that he was hated by bikers!

I'm actually quite keen on you although you're not particularly tall and as much as I love watching Top Gear and hearing Jeremy's sarcastic attempts at humour, my loyalty lies with you.

I wish you a speedy recovery.

I went to watch one of the European championship meets at the Pod back in the 90's. The Vampire and another jet car went head to head, and the other car lost control as it passed the finish line. It veered across the track just missing the Vampire, destroying the barrier and gantry before it cartwheeled into the field.

The driver was killed instantly

Get well soon Richard
