Tuesday night i picked up my new 900, happy as can be :D wednesday morning i decide the very first job after years of wanting it has to be the clutch. At the weekend i got all the gear from spares geezer and sat down ready to do it...

Undo the cover - check
undo the six spring bolts, 1 2 3 4 5 & my god this last one is tight, oh hang on i've just stripped the fitting so now my allen key is spinning in the hole. :banghead: I decide to try anything, wd40, mole grips, screwdriver, even tapping the allen key with a hammer while turning gave some grip but it would not budge.

So i went for a drive and purchased some stainless bolts to replace the long cover bolts anyway, had a think and decided to splash out on a much needed dremel. Came back and sliced a stripe on the head for a screwdriver and guess what, yup its still stuck solid. I was about to scream but the neighbour popped in to say hello so i thought i'd be polite and just swear like buggery instead.

I had a plan... if the spring was causing the tension then remove the spring and i could undo the bolt  so using my new dremel and a dose of over confidence i sliced the spring and kept removing semi circles of it bit by bit until it was gone, so had the pressure and the bolt just spun out with a gentle tun of a mole grip. :D:D:D

So fit the bearing thingy, fit the cover plate, springs and caps, bolting up the springs and one of the bolts was giving no resistance and seemed to be turning more, "ah that'll be why then" i said to myself as the head of the bolt fell on the floor leaving the stainless bolt stem in the clutch drum! :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

"FU.. oh hello neighbour". So next is a shamefull call to my mechaninc who said ride it with 5 springs, try not to use the clutch etc and come over (40 miles) and i'll swap the drum over with one i have. So we did, and he did and i paid to top up my phone while he did, then paid him a ton for new drum and clucth plates too while he was at it, then bought the biggest slice of cake i could find, filled up with petrol and came home again.

It can't go as badly wrong today can it?

Sounds as if it was a bit of a mechanical ordeal Dave. So when are we going to get a public viewing of the new beast or is it already in bits?

It will be tight if you've removed the other 5 !!:dunce: (Assuming that's what you did)

Try to undo each one a bit at a time, you might save yourself some trouble next time.
Cheers

i was doing the bit at a time, i think it was the 4th or 5th one that stuck so cam back to it.

Rod and others, yes its in bits, had the headlight off, u bend, indicators, bars and brembos off today, done some painting and some swapping with kylie. just a few more bits to do that end and then i'll start on the back. She's looking mean tho and should be ready to come out and play by end of next week i hope. Can't afford to do all the mods this month but bit by bit...

Nice one PD - new you would fall to the lure of the 900 and dry clutch before long. Which 900 have you got - assume it's a carbed one like Kylie?

Look forward to build photo's :mand:

Same as both the solo which I've had from new, and the trike doner bought 2nd hand. Great fun to own and possibly the best version of the later 900's IMO. The 'ie' bikes sure run better in cold weather

How do you like power delivery compared to the 600? I love the 3-6000 rpm grunt mine has - although the gearing is a bit tall as standard. Stick a few extra teeth on the rear cog and it's a bonkers bike up to a ton plus. I also swapped to DP ecu and open airbox on the solo, and sure it's gained a few bhp although I've yet to get it dyno'd.

Im all for an open airbox. Induction roar might be the only pleasure we are left with if noise emissions are enforced and Termis become the possession of outlaws. Mine sounds like it's gulping down gallons of the stuff when you rev it hard. With the baffles out as well, it's just plain rude the noise it makes. I usually push it to the end of the road before I start it, when I take the bike to work (5:30am), as that way I won't wake up the whole street.

This one has DP cans (remus) carbon oval, open airbox stage 2 kit and a CPU prog written by my mechanic installed by previous owner. I tried a couple of 900's in the past but i don't remember them being like this :D

Tonight i'm mainly painting bits....

Ah yes the induction roar...

Mine was masked by the racket of the 105db high level cans, but I've recently fitted a set of add in baffles supplied by spareshack. They take the edge of the exhaust note a treat but still sound nice, and the bonus is I can now hear the lovely WAARP...WAARP through the open airbox when I give it stick.
