I have just fitted a new set of front indicators which appeared to be working fine but then when I had put everything away I noticed that the indicators are flashing out of sinc with the idiot light - indicator on idiot light off - indicator light off idiot light on for either left or right turn.
Now I do not know if it was like this before or not.
Does anybody know if is this right wrong or indfferent?

type are they? some need resistors fitted to stop them flashing to fast?

As they say in the best of circles "They all do that Sir", well all of the bikes I've ever owned have done it, I'm sure our car & van do too.

My S4 dash light flashes in reverse to the indicators. Don't worry about it.

Mate don't listen to them :p I know nada about electrics, but that ain't right. Come on folks, if we're not allowed to have proper banter on this forum, at least lets make it proper technical resource. Too many questions are just being given the old 'don't worry about it', or 'it's a Ducati' answer :twak:
Hopefully someone will be along to offer you a proper explanation to help you fix it

Good point.
As mentioned, some aftermarket indicators need a resistor put in the circuit to provide the right resistance (not the armed kind).
If you still have the originals or the new ones have the same resistance (measure it!), I would have a look at the indicator relay. With age they may get a bit gunky inside (surface oxidisation). Try tapping it gently with a screwdriver handle and see if it will work for another 1000 miles or buy a new one.

Have you checked your own indicators, on your M750's ???????
Because it seems to be happening on all three S4's on this thread :Furious:
 Hmmm, maybe I should hand back my City & Guilds MVCS, certificates !!!!!

Funny you should mention. Mine where 'out of frequency' the other day, but corrected itself on its own.
Just noticed that the 'problem' isn't frequency, but phase shift. Sorry, really should read more carefully.
This just means that the indicators and idiot lights are on two different parts of the circuit. One supplied with voltage when the relay is 'on', and the other when it's 'off'. Sounds like a stupid arrangement, but not worth fiddling with.

All I'm saying is either way, it would be great to learn why. You're right, you have qualifications and the knowledge that many of us don't, so come on...share it with us. I didn't mean it to sound like I was having a go...sorry.
My 750 is fine, and both parts run on the same circuit...I have absolutely no idea why they would put them on two seperate parts, that just doesn't make any sense at all. It sounds to me like you're losing an earth somewhere.
It sounds to me like you're losing an earth somewhere.
Wouldn't that simply give no light at all?

or they would work intermittently, or a dull light, or as you say, not at all.
What this seems to be, is suddenly noticing something, ie, the lights flashing out of phase, that would never have been thought about before, but stands out, now the indicators have been changed.
Then again, it could be the aliens !!!!!!!!:on: :on: :on:

Is that what they’re teaching on City and Guilds these days then
Sorry mate, they should be in sync...simple as that! But like I say, I don't profess to know how or why, or what's causing them to be out of sync.

No they taught us that back in 1975, when you were taught how to find the fault and repair it, without the use of diagnostic computers and not just change things for new as is the norm today.
Tell us all why they should be in sync, it seems that yours is the only one so far, that is. Could it be that your relay is different to ours. All of our indicators are working perfectly, mine have been so far for almost two years.

Well maybe there's your answer then...some do and some don't.
Mine are in sync too. My bike is also an old 750.
They simply decided to put the lights elsewhere in the circuit in the later bikes. Possibly when they got heaps of electronics, disabling you to find any faults. It was done to make it all work nicely together in prefect harmony or go completely mad at the slightest fault and impossible to find and remedy.

To flash out of phase the relay must look like this:
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e343/jim66a/nancrelay.gif
with the warning lamp on the normaly open contactor 87 and the indicator switch on the normally closed 87a. permanant live to 30 and live from the indicator swich to 85 (coil/timer +) 86 - earth

I have an '01 S4 with standard indi's and they flash out of sync. :spin:
Isn't the indicator relay incorporated into the instrument cluster?

I think you meant ‘the indicator lamps via a normally open contact on the indicator switch on normally closed contact 87a’
