has anyone had a problem with the plugs 'sooting up' on a regular basis ? - this is a bike that my step brother is trying to get going, after someone bought it 2nd hand with no service history!! it has a k&n + some after market pipes that i have not heard of, also not sure if it has been dynoed - however this problem just appeared after a minor service , plug oil +filter etc. and was not there before. any thoughts appreciated.

Over-rich fuel mix causes the sooty deposists on plugs, they may have tweaked the mix during the service, the chokes stuck on a bit etc.....
If it's got a K&N filter and after market pipes it probably also has had the carbs dynojetted, have a look at the thread below for fueling set up stuff,

If your step brothers in Bristol with you Louigi Moto's not far away if he needs a good ducati spanner man to look at it.

Mine was runing rich on one cylinder only.
i took the carbs apart and changed all the o'rings i could change.(one for them, the one around the main jet, was gone.)
the problem is now solved.
