Hi guys and gals.....

I'm not new to ducati's but I have never had a monster before, I can only afford a 600 I think as have about 1500 - 1750 to spend. I have seen this one on ebay,

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DUCATI-MONSTER-M600_W0QQitemZ4642661026QQcategoryZ9919QQrdZ1QQcmd ZViewItem

seeing as you are all monster experts...... what do you think of it? is it a good model, colour etc?

Your comments will be much appreciated

I'd say that's well overpriced. There was a change to the engine etc in '97, that one is the earlier model. The fact it's been dry stored for 2 years means it'll need an immediate service and belt change as well.
You should be looking at £1500 - £1700 for about a '99 - '00 model 600 in good condition, there are a few around, worth waiting around for that.
Or, if you did fance a bigger one, you should be able to pick up an early 900 for well under £2K as well, have the benefit of massively imcreased torque and a rattly dry clutch.

Thanks Zimbo, very good advice, I've done a belt change before on my old 748, apart from being time consuming it wasnt that bad a job. I didnt realise that the 600 doesnt have a dry clutch?

I would love to have a 900 but cant seem to find one cheap enough :(

How much do you think that one on ebays worth? I spoke to him and he said he would take 1600 for it without the mot...... is that still overpriced?

Pugi
28-05-2006, 02:11 PM
I reckon he should have no more than just over a grand for it, seeing that it needs service. Get a newer bike for the same money he wants.
The early 900s I've seen, start at around 2k and could be an option as Zimbo says.

bobob
28-05-2006, 02:59 PM
Blimey.... as little as that? Don't think he would go down that far :)

I'll give it a miss I think, wait untill something better shows up. Does anyone on here want to sell me a monster?????

bobob

What about this one? I spoke to him and he told me it has no history so he changed the belts and fork seals two weeks ago.... looks good to me with the termis etc... don't you think?? He might take less for it seeing as it has no bids etc....

He only bought this a month ago. He's obviously a trader cos this is the link to the sale to him.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=9919&item=4634628131

I'd ask him, if he's a dealer, and if not, why's he selling so soon after buying it? Still seems a bit high in price too. Remember this bike is nearly 10 years old!!

no paperwork to say bits have been done?

you can get them cheaper, just keep an eye open in the papers, and also strangely enough in dealers.

We got our 2001 M600 for just under a grand from a dealer who took it in px & just wanted it 'out' as wouldnt sell on too quickly. Changed the front mudguard & handlebars - and took it for an MOT 2 days later where it passed.
Now doing a 2nd season as a racebike:D

if you really want a 600, then try & go for the ones from 98 - 01 as the electrics are not so much of a problem. (but any Ducati from 98+ will be better:D )

Happy shopping - and good luck. The bikes are out there, but with the sun coming out private vendors are chancing their arm for prices for punters who are keen to buy.

C:)

bobob
28-05-2006, 04:24 PM
Thats a very good point, the sun and prices bit...... and thanks for spotting the 'iffy' situation with the york monster... looks very dubious doesnt it?!?

Can't believe you found a 600 for under a grand c, well done, you must have been chuffed to bits!

The hunt continues.... thanks for all your help guys and gals :)

i went to look at the one thats had the belts done,£1500,its his girlfriends he told me,on the left hand side its been dropped, break fluid has taken paint off frame , marked engine, and took paint off tank in places, its a ,bit tatty, frame being touched up with no intention of matching paint colour, it sounds well, but go to see it before you bid ,i would have been disapointed if id bid on it without seeing it.also said recipt for belts being done is in the post:scratch:

thats a very good point manwitharedbike! I thought that was odd too.... anyway, I shan't be going for that one, or the other one for that matter. Thanks for all the info matblack, saves me treking all the way from London to York only to be disapointed.

The monster dark with the battery problem seems a bit to much hassle for me. I crashed my 900ss in Italy 2 years ago and the battery acid ruined the frame and engine casing, I was never happy with it after I had it repaired, will give it a miss I think!

It does indeed mean that the bike was registered in '98 or so, but there's no telling how long it had sat in a dealer's storeroom / showroom before it was sold, and it would only have been registered when actually sold. It could easily be a '96 bike registered in '98.

I have a friend who is looking to sell his monster. It's ten years old and has only done 2000 miles since new. Yellow, early 600 model. It's currently "set aside" for another friend of mine, when she passes her test, but should she choose to buy something else then get in touch with me and I can pass any interested party's details on to the owner. From what he tells me it is in exceptional condition for it's age.

Thanks emily's driver, not sure about the yellow bit :) but sounds like a lovely bike to me. Will keep it in mind and if I don't find one soon, I'll come back to you for more details. There was a yellow one for sale down near reigate last week, I spoke to the lady about it but couldnt see it as it had broken down and was in he garage.... oops! Oh well.... I keep checking ebay and biketrader every morning, afternoon, evening..... but nothing amazing has popped up yet sadly, will not give up though!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Would really like a 750 or 900 as the last bike I had was a 748 and the one before a 900ss, am a bit concerned that I will spend half my time on the 600 screaming into the helmet to go faster :)

It certainly looks in very good condition, and it seems pretty much stock standard so you could have great fun making it your own.

The only thing that I wondered about was the complete clutch replacement? What happened that it needed replacing?!? I have a suspicious mind though he he!

£2500 seems a little high. I bought my '98 750 for £1800 and there quite a few costly extras with it...cf sil high mounts, stage 2 dynojet, datatool alarm etc.

Its definately worth trying to bring him down a little, as it does seem a nice bike.

Very standard bike except for the RR tacho unit.
Asking to much again though, especially since it's the early model with the old engine casing, and single front disc. Probably a 97 sold late. No more than 2k I say.

£2500? err...i don't think so. You can pick up early 620's for that sort of money and I know which one I would go for. As Pugi said it looks a mint bike - but also very standard & I've seen bikes with more extras (like Eonan's 750) sell for less.

As a comparison I have the same bike (-97), even down to the RR tacho unit. I paid 2600 for mine a year ago.
However I also got:
2-1 full exhaust system
KN-filter with modded airbox
Keihin carbs
RR alloy tank
RR CF hugger
RR headlight alloy fairing
RR alloy bellyban
tailchop
etc.
You get the picture....

I'd say that 750 is worth no more than £2K, absolute max.
As Gary says, for just over £2K nowadays you can buy an early 620, same power more or less as the carbed 750 but with the benefit of fuel injection etc, and that's a 2002 / 03 bike, if I was spending just over £2K I'd look for a 620 or an early M900 with extras (cans etc)..
Don't give up, your monster will be along fairly soon I'm sure!!!

There's a 600 monster for sale on the Ducati Sporting Club website, £1250. I don't know a lot about it other than it's currently a Desmodue race bike, having done just one race at Cadwell Park in March, where it finished seventh. It comes with full race bodywork (less seat unit) and all road gear to convert back to a road bike, it'll be mechanically sound and well tuned, race can, air filter kit, dynojet kit etc, plus fairly new Diablo tyres. Could be worth a look?

Copied from the original post:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My brother's race bike he used at Cadwell. Circumstances are forcing the sale

It was a pretty much immaculate 11500mile road bike with fsh. It has a race can, diablo tyres and Ali's old fairing on ! It does need a seat unit but is ready to race and competitive, he finsihed 7th first time out on it.
Also includes all the road gear which is in excellent condition including all lights.
He is asking £1250 for it

Wouldn't have thought it needed much to get it back on the road, refit lights and numberplate board etc and get it down the MOT station? They all just plug in! You also get well sorted suspension and as much power as the 583 engine is capable of without internal work. I know it's quick, I chased it at Cadwell and couldn't catch it! You also get track bodywork, which is very saleable!
Never mind, will keep looking . . .

You may track down more by typing in your specific post code or widening search radius?

Aha... morning Pugi :)

Yeah it sounds good to me, a 620 with no mileage in spotless condition, sounds too good to be true! I like the sound of pauls bike too but his has 11k on the clock, although it sounds like its coming from a good home. Am waiting for some more pictures from the lady before I jump on the train from London to go see. Why do they say the 620 is better than the 750 carbs?

Pugi
01-06-2006, 12:23 AM
Morning.
I wouldn't be too worried about milage as long as it has a good history. Never the less it's always more preferable the lower it is. The 620 is considered better since it is fuel injected. It puts out as much power as the 750 but the 750 may suffer from carb icing during the older months of the year.

bobob
01-06-2006, 12:29 AM
Does it have 5 or six gears on the 620? Not too sure what to go for now as for this money I could possibly buy a late 90s 900..... choices choices...... I suppose at least with this 620 its hardly going to have an unusual past... although just thinking, regardless of the low mileage, won't it need a belt change now?

Pugi
01-06-2006, 12:39 AM
Not sure how many gears the 620 has, but it should be easy to look up.
http://www.ducati.com/bikes/my2004/ducatiModel.jhtml;jsessionid=EMCPUD55UZMHMCRNCB2SF EYKFUIHUIV3?part=engine&modelName=620-04
This link says it has 6 gears, unless it's a Dark, then it has 5.
I'd go for the 620 if you want low milage bike close to standard and a 900 if you don't mind the milage and want a good few extras. I suppose the 750 lands in between these options.
Belts are changed every 12,000 miles (if I remember correctly) or every 2 years.
Nice chatting to you, but I'm afraid bed is a must now. :hissy:
Good night.

Zimbo
01-06-2006, 06:11 AM
The lady's 620 will almost certainly need it's belts changed. As above, they need doing every 2 years or 12000 miles, but in addition it's recommended that you change them on a bike that's been stood for a while without being used.
The lady's bike looks in great condition, haggle her down a few hundred and that'll pay for a full service as well.
Paul's bike is likely to be in tip top mechanical condition, I'd be surprised if it needs anything at all. I personally wouldn't be worried about the mileage, 11k is hardly high, and often bikes that have been used regularly are more reliable than bikes that are rarely started.
One last factor to consider, does Paul's bike come with extras like cans, K&N filter etc? The lady's bike looks pretty standard.

Pedro

My two penneth....

if you've had a 748 & 900SS you may find the 600 wanting. The early 900 bikes are an absolute giggle, loads of torque and that lovely rattly clutch. Yes, carb icing can be a prob in colder months (but I've never suffered to my knwledge!!) but the extra torque of the bigger motor is worth it.

Like Zimbo says, there are sub £2k 900s out there. It would be my choice.

Ped

And no, I'm not selling it....ever!

Does it have 5 or six gears on the 620?

6 speed boxes on the 620 only came in, in late 54 plate 620's - tho you might still find some 'old stock' 05 bikes with 5 speed.

So, Psychlists bike will most likely be a 5 speed, unless someone has retro fitted it.
Quite honestly, the 6 speed box wont make much difference at all, unless you are often running about in excess of 115mph & up to 130 like on the race track, as it would be most useful then :D

Mileage? - I wouldnt worry about a bike with that kind of mileage at all - at least its been used, which Ducati's like to be:)

...and couldn't be bothered to trawl through the thread to see if this bike has been mentioned. It's yellow and has a buy it now (according to the "ask the seller" section at the bottom) of just £950. For that money, you could get it sorted and back on the road and still have money to spare!!

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4645033675&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

If I was looking to buy another, I'd jump on this one just because of the price!!

Get a carbed 900 - they're the mutts nuts and I love mine. Only bought it a fortnight ago and I'm still grinning like the proverbial Cheshire Cat having traded up from a 600. Loads more grunt and as for that clutch rattle...

There's a beautiful one on sale somewhere in the For sale section (a few pages back now) --> http://www.ukmonster.co.uk/monster/showthread.php?t=17095. Belongs to Woody - looks gorgeous from the photos and very well cared for, Dynojetted, K&Ns and shortened and polished 'zausts as well as a comfy seat. Tis red (the fastest colour too). E-mail him and if he's not already flogged it (and I wouldn't be surprised) he'll send you some lovely snaps.

Sounds like a deal matblack what with eonans offer of a cheap yoke... just find out why its got a cracked yoke first ay? Make sure the forks aren't bent, wheel buckled etc etc... if it was innocent, ie it just fell over then it culd be a real bargain, its a nice looking bike and in your preferred colour too :)

Right, after reading the last 7 or so posts I am starting to swing towards a 900..... does anybody here know of any, anywhere, that are for sle under 2k? There are some on biketrader at 2500 and one or two on ebay but again are too high. There must be somebody out there who wants to sell me their pride and joy (then again if it was their pride and joy why would they sell it to me... :mand:)

Looking at where the yoke has cracked (where steering lock pin engages) my guess is either...

A/ bike fell off stand /got knocked over while locked & pin got forced into yoke?

B/ someone had a go a stealing bike and damaged yoke trying break steering lock?

Either way there may be other tell tale damage to the bike (bars, levers, mirrors, cans, tank, frame steering lock etc..) which could be spotted on a viewing. In fact I've just spotted one of the bar end mirrors is cracked - so that could be a clue?

Even at £950 it's a risky prospect with 21K on the clock unless the motors been properly serviced and the owner can back this up with dealer receipts for things like regular oil changes, cambelts, shims etc...

I would personally rather spend a bit more, and get a lower mileage/newer model bike with more service history TBH.

He hasn't replied to me either matblack.... but some very wise and interesting words from gary there. It depends how mechanically minded you are and also if you have the time, space etc... I am after a bike that I can put the key in and go, but it still looks like a god little bike to me, try and get some answers out of him and also as GT says, find out about its service history too, if its been fully serviced and he has proof to back it up, also if its just fallen over or tried to be stolen, it shouldnt be too expensive to sort out I wouldn't have thought.

To give you an idea what you can get for your money if your patient/get lucky/haggle etc...

Blagged donor for the trike project last August in the MCN classifieds. 2001 'Y' plate injected 900 dark with less than 6000miles on the clock, and some service history. Brand new set of Diablo's fitted - pinched for solo as it's michelin pilots were shagged. No tax/mot and a bit scabby/salt damaged due to winter use and not much TLC, but otherwise sound and ran well.

Cost £2500 ;)

Think it turned out ok in the end...?

An interesting debate, that seems to have run and run. But most of what I've seen revolves around bikes on Ebay. Where else can you pick an early Monster (m900 prefered) ? There seem to be so few around, all the bike shops will flog you a newer one for a tidy sum, but where are all the private older used ones. Do main dealers take them in PX and pass them on to independents because they are to old for their nice clean showroom? Of course in you're selling one get in touch.

Also how true are the valuations on the Parkers guide?

http://www.parkers.co.uk/pricing/used_bike/

Most Monsters seem to beat their pricing, is that the norm?

BTW my first post (of many I hope) still looking for the bike. Rode a S4R a couple of weeks ago..........wow. But I'll be happy with a M900 or 1000 for a summer of fun.
Cheers. Quarx

Call me sceptical but how the hell can a bike being knocked over cause the youke to get cracked? Yokes are designed with strength in mind as that's what holds thr front end on!! I smell something fishy and it ain't Grimsby...

Parkers quote a Y2K W plate 600 dark as follows...

Ducati M600 Dark 2000/W
Original Price £ 4250
Independent Dealer £ 2265
Private Good £ 2025
Private Poor £ 1395
Part Exchange £ 1780

Given its condition & the fact it has some useful extras like the termi's, twin discs, immobiliser, dynojet kit etc.. I would have thought it's gotta be worth at least a couple of grand?

I also think Pedro has a good point - for a few hundred £££'s more (say around £2.5 - £3.0K) you could pick up a nice 620 or early 900, both of which would have a bit more poke than the 600. Having previously owned a 748 & 900SS you may find the 600 a bit lacking in the oomph factor? Try to blag a test ride on a 600,620,750 or 900 - that should help you decide one way or the other :)

Zimbo
03-06-2006, 02:42 PM
I don't, but the mileage isn't excessive and it sounds in good condition with service history, so I should think it's probably as safe a bet as any! Personally I prefer the earlier (pre late '96) M900, because the early ones had the 900SS engine with big valves and better cam profiles, not going to make much difference in near standard trim but if you plan to tune it up much (big bore kits, kehins etc) it may be a limiting factor on the bhp you can get out of it.

Before you buy new discs please do me a favour and check whether your brake pads are corroded on the edges which stops them from returnin at times causing them to rub. I had this before the weekender panic:eek: panic:cry: but i just cleaned off the rust with dremel or file and smeared a little copperslip ( about £3,00 a tube from halfords on back and edges of brake pad. Obviously not much and not on front of pads. Do this and save yourself hundreds. You said he rode it in winter and this can cause it. I know.

bobob
04-06-2006, 09:51 PM
Yeah its also only done 500 miles since last august, when going slow i can hear it rubbing on one spot on the right hand disc...... will take them out one evening this week and check them out, I know about the grinding down of the outer lip, it stops the squeeling too :)

Albie
04-06-2006, 09:57 PM
Same symptons. This can cause warping discs. Makes you wonder whether these warping discs could have been saved by better quality plating on pads or generally better services if this included removing and checking pads.

Its had a stage 1 kit and fully open airbox, not too sure of what else its had done and not too sure myself of what a stage 2 does????? Its not my first ducati as you probably know but I tell you what, it has better acceleration in 2nd than the 748 or 900ss ever had :mand:

Zimbo
05-06-2006, 06:33 AM
The difference between stage 1 and stage 2 is mostly in the jet sizes supplied in the box I think, not sure if the needle has a slightly different profile too?
And what can you do to make it more nutty? Loads! High compression JE pistons give you around 6bhp all through the range for £200, a 944 kit or 980 big bore kit improves torque in the low to midrange no end, ST2 cams or better still Vee two cams give loads more midrange as well. Kehin FCR41 carbs improve throttle response no end and give a couple more bhp. A lightweight flywheel is £90 and makes it even more prone to wheelie. Shall i go on?
Mine is currently up from the standard 70bhp to 84.5 at the back wheen and 69 foot pounds of torque, ooo ovely :mand:
