looks like a DP Carbon single seat unit that's been sprayed up.

Yes it is a DP carbon solo seat, #96949202B. Will fit
M620/750/800/900/1000 2002 and later
(according to 2004 catalogue)

Just had a look at the 'fits on' list on the ducati website too & it looks like it won't fit any pre 2002 bike. Anyone know what makes the mounting different and if it's possible to modify?

I suspect the only difference is the cutaway in the tank is rounder on the later bikes so the front of the seat will look a little mismatched at the front.
A quick search will probably throw up the appropriate photos.
