Just had a 14 tooth front sprocket fitted on my S4R, but since then ive noticed a whining noise. dificult to tell where it is coming from, sounds a bit like a wheel baring whine, but wasnt there before i changed sprocket, is this the norm when you go down a tooth ??

cheers.

i have noticed that my S4rs whines like a politician, gonna ask at the shop next time i go there, but no changes to the gearing, mine sounds more like straight cut gear whine

Chain too tight perhaps or it might be rubbing on the top of the swing arm.

Did you adjust the chain after you fitted the sprocket as there will be a slight difference in the tension due to the new cog size.

Yeh re-tensioned chain after, and not rubing on swingarm. Strange !
Lot better tho with a 14 tooth.

I trust the pitch is right. I nearly bought a 14 sprocket for mine the other day but told not to fit. It fitted a 916 and 1000. i think its 525 and 515 maybe

My 600 has had the same prob' since I had the sprocket changed on my 12'000 service, it has now after 400 miles started to disappear and is only noticeable when using the engine to brake. Checked the chain and all seemed fine so have no idea were it came from or why.

Mine has a whine but it's not intrusive enough to bother me and sounds more like a characteristic of the transmission rather than a gearing change since the sprocket is now 14 tooth up front and one bigger at the rear.

Check the torque on the two clamp bolts on the rear of the winging arm.

If they are over tightened they will distort the hub and the internal bearings.

Must be done to the exact specs and no more

Good point, the torque settings are the only thing i havnt checked, what are they, anyone know ?? Had it fitted at local bike shop so you would of thought they will be set ok, but ille check anyway.

Well, asuming your from Pinxton, nr Alfreton, it was Revolution motorcycles, Sheepbridge. Seemed to no what he was doing ! Apparently the settings are 32 NM, but dont know what that equates to in good old lb per ft ?

Don't know for sure but I would suggest it's the worn chain running on a new sprocket. Chains stretch over time and the whining noise may be your old chain knocking lumps off you shiny new sprocket - it's just a guess but reading the thread it seems a few other people have had the same symptoms when fitting a new sprocket...

Cheers
