View Full Version : Carburetor woes - help me get to the weekender

Taken my carbs off (Keihin FCR) to give them a clean and find out why they're pi$$ing petrol everywhere. It's flowing out of the air vent pipe, suggesting that a float has stuck or something else is obstructing the flow, leaving no other option than pouring out on the road...
The floats seem to be moving fine though and I have blown in every found orifice to confirm that the floats do move properly and air seems to go where petrol is meant to. Mouth tastes good now. :mand:
So...should I just slap them back on an hope for the best or have I overlooked something vital? Not a carburetor virtuose so I'd appreciate some pointers before I put it all together and realise it still leakes and that I can't go to the weekender.

Pugi, not sure where you got your FCR's from, but why don't you send an email to Chris at CA Cycleworks. Really great guy, and a bit of a FCR guru...I'm sure he'd be only too willing to help.

Check the condition of the cone shaped seal on top of the needle valve, also the condition of the brass tube it sits in. After that you could really do with a bit of clear plastic tube, to check/adjust the float heights before it all goes back together.

Which part numbers are they?

How do I check the float heights with the tube? Thanks.

Needle valve is 42
...and it's a bit hard to see from the diagram, without the carbs infront of me but I'm thinking it probably sits in 36.
Float height is adjusted by CAREFULLY bending the plate(part of 39, near 40) that 43 clips to,
http://gstwin.com/float_height_check.htm
your FCR documentation(or an email to Cal. Cycle Works) should tell you where the fuel should come to relative to the join between float bowl and carb body, it's usually around 5mm below.
also check that the little spring loaded plunger on the bottom of 42 is moving freely.

All checked and look ok. Just float height to have a look at.

I had this with my FCRs, its not that uncommon on them

I replaced the needles and the needle seats, I couldn't see any reason for them not to seal but they didn't.

This tells you how to set the heights, you dont need the tool, a ruler will do.

Allens performance do all the bits.

Nooo.....I don't want to order things and have to wait. Are theye xpensive too? I'll pop them in tomorrow and see if God smiles upon me or not. If not...
Brilliant link though, thanks!

Found a dry way of setting float height here:

Hope this may be of use to someone else too.

Got it all back together and thankfully it's all working a treat now. Must have been something obstructing the floats. Thanks for all your comments.
