.......and it's not a gay thing boys. Oh no. In fact it's pretty macho, in an oily greasy kinda way.
It is now a fact of life, that modern bikes very rarely leak oil. (Ade's bike being the odd exception of course, but he's a Jock, so it doesn't count). In fact, I honestly cannot remember the last time I had a bike that suffered oil leaks.
Too many bikes also, are 'tupperware torpedos', and thus, because of bikes being totally leak free, and/or covered in plastic, they are washed down with soap and water, very much like washing a car. Other alternatives being specialist cleaners like 'Muck Off' et al.
This has led to the complete lack of lovely 'bikey smells' that used to permeate an area whenever a bike stopped at traffic lights, or was parked up.
The main ingredient of these 'bikey smells', was of course 'Gunk'.
With the passing of oil leaks came the passing of 'Gunk' as one of the bikers main cleaning aids.
But not for me. Whenever I wash the bike, I start off by brushing 'Gunk' over the barrels and heads, wash the rest of the bike with normal cleaner, and hose off. Whenever I stop, that lovely smell wafts up and around from the hot engine.....'Motorcycle Perfume' indeed. You can't beat it.

Well htere's a first, a thread by didge all about smells and none of them are from his rear end. I'm not old enough to know these old smells of biking but i can relate to the new smells of biking. Whenever i work on my bikes or clean them, the grease, wd40, cleaner or even petrol that gets on the fingers leaves a smell that lingers, and its a nice one. There's something about that whiff on the fingers that lingers, and hours after the job is done i can sniff the whiff and a smile spreads over my face.

I know EXACTLY what you mean Dave. Nothing like "sniffing the whiff", it always makes me smile as well. No one else seems too tho'.

The smell of Two stroke - now that brings back memories of my dad racing.

I remember in the late 70's syphoning petrol out of my dad's car to put in my RD400. I sucked too hard and swallowed a significant amount of 4 star.

Later, at my then girlfriend's house, it caused me to belch continously (but quietly) after a while her father said with a puzzled look on his face "can anyone smell petrol?"

I didn't dare light up a ciggie for days!

Swarfega! Strange but true! My dad used to let me play in his garage counting his nuts and bolts and trashing his old cork gaskets and my mum making me washing my hands with green gunk afterwards. I love the smell of Swarfega - I don't think you can buy it any more can you?

Of course you can. Halfrauds sell it, as do many other places. They do Swarfega wipes too.
