my under 2k mile s2r has started spluttering when reaching 9k revs, also after a run my exhaust is black and sooty.(i guess being a non mechanical bod its running rich). one other possible issue is just recently when up to temperature im getting a pinking noise from the cans on tickover. any advice would be most helpful, one other question do you think that if it is running rich the warranty would cover tuning / dyno. in advance of your superb assistance on this matter ,I THANK YOU ALL.:hail:

The rev limit is 9k on that bike. What you doin up there anyway. All the poke is further down the range. Seriously though, my S2r was badly setup from the factory, or supplying dealer. I just thought it was supposed to run like that being a V-twin, all lumpy and rough. On the 600 service the technician noticed it and adjusted it as much as he could. The rear cylinder was way too rich and he couldn't lean it off any more. Turned out to be lack of compression. Ended up with new barrels and pistons. I'd get it into a dealer for a check. If its just a setup problem I would not expect it to be covered, although it won't be expensive to fix.
Get a Power Commader and pay for a dyno run to get it properly set up. I did and am well chuffed. I now get max torque at 3k and it stays flat up to 8.5k before dropping off. The termis and open air box may have helped alittle though.

The bike would be hitting the rev limiter at that speed, I know my 900 starts to cut out around 8000-8500rpm. The engine has peaked before it's reached 9K any way so no point caning it TBH. My own 900 to a long time to run in properly, and didn't really loosen up until it had about 3000 miles on the clock. At less than 2000 miles your s2R engine is barely run in and shouldn't really be thrashed - especially if it's not running properly in the first place.
If the bikes still under warentee I would take it to a dealer ASAP
