I know it's a wanted...but I thought it was more appropriate for 'Random', I'm not sure why, but when I started typing it seemed to make sense

We're now looking to buy a classic...a 916. I realise this is a Monster forum, but I know a lot of you guys will be able to point me in the right direction.

At the moment the only resources we know of are the usual suspects...eBay, Auto Trader, MCN etc

Can anyone add to this list? Maybe you have a spare 916 lying around, just getting in the way...look under those beds!

I just sold mine, probably regret it at some stage.
Its one of those bikes that you'll always regret never having if you dont get one when you have the chance. Good hunting!

Good luck with the search, i wish i did have one lying around i've allways wanted one of these, its the iconic Ducati racer in my mind it just looks right and was the bike that first raised an interest with Ducati bikes for me, maybe in year or so (well i'm allowed to dream)

Thanks for these Yorkie. OK...unlike the Monster, if we decide to get one, were looking to do as little to it as possible. That means she MUST be red, preferably with black wheels...although painting them isn't such a big deal.

Mand...she looks gorgeous! I wouldn't be selling either!

That last one you posted Yorkie looks interesting...full service history too.

When I bought the Monster, I really didn't listen to the people who warned me of the cost of parts, servicing etc...maybe I should have ha ha..nah, no way!

With these bikes though, I wouldn't imagine they'd be any cheaper to run, but are they much more expensive? I see one of the ones for sale on the DSC site lists having recently had a major service done...£800

sjr999r...she does. Why the hell you sell man? Anything to do with the above question maybe?

Well some dealers like to rip ppl of 800 quid is ****ing robbery, and takes the ****........when will dealer stop pulling the wool over ppls eyes......when they string this along........'Well sir its a ducati, there always expensive to maintain' BOLLOX...........there dearer than a JAP bike, but thats its.
Basical......air cooled motors, dont have half the stuff to bloody maintain, not water cooled only 2valves per cyclinder, unlike there counterparts, water cooled,4 vales per cyclinder, more electrics, fairing panels etc etc etc
Mine 748sps was serviced twice a year at £550 inc parts and THAT WAS EVERYTHING.
The only reason they become expensive is for 2 reasons and 2 reasons only,
1st ppl buy them and dont know what the hell there getting into and 2nd dealers or other bikeshops dont know what there hell there doing with them.....mess it up.....and then leave it to some poor sod to buy it take it to a specialist and faced with a bloody big bill and i'll leave my rant if i may with this........U buy a ducati, its full of passion, soul, history and countless World championship history, its a 2 wheeled Ferrari, not a pisssin Honda Civic!
Rant over,grrrrrrrrrrrrrr
PS Oh and reason y i sold it............cos i never could get the best out of it,(basically am ****.cant pull wheelies or get my knee down)the bike got me down..so it had to go.
PPS,the first owner of my 748 missed a service( and later found out it wasnt shimmed properly)..therefore the shims went out and kanckered the cam and 8 rockers.4 cams are £1000 and the rockers were £78 EACH,plus the labour, new oil/coolant and shimed.that was a big Total i can tell u!!

One day I WILL be able to afford another 998 :(

Until then I'll just look wistfully back on my time with "loony" and force myself out on the numptystrada at weekends and the baby Monster for commuting. They're just not as good to "own" as the iconic shaped 998 was, but I can run them AND the DD Monster for the same dosh the 998 was costing. Bear in mind that averaging 12 to 15 thousand miles a year I would have been paying for 4 or 5 (4-valve) services and a new chain and sprocket set every 2 years, as well as several track days (cos I wouldn't be able to afford to go racing) and three or four sets of tyres a year! It is MUCH cheaper running three air cooled Dukes than one 4-valver!
But I still lust after another one :pedro:

One of the Kenties Paul Critcher recently bought an early 916 from Daytona MC's. 20K miles on an 'M' plate and a bit of a snotter, but complete, original and pretty cheap. He's spent some money on it - cosmetic stuff mainly as the motor had just been serviced, but also said he's spent about 200hrs in the garage cleaning, painting & fettling to date!

He went out for a blast last weekend and lost the complete cush drive & rear sprocket, leaving him with a mile to push it home. It looks like the rear hub unit sheared off, and only a few bolts were stopping the rear wheel from dropping off completely. The factory have offered to supply a new £600 hub unit FOC, as its a known fault that was part of a recall. Daytona will pick up another £150 costs as the bike had 3 months warrentee, leaving Paul to fork out another £150 plus fit the bits himself.

Still want a 916? ;)

I'll see if I can get a few photo's to post up.

can anyone put thier finger on why the 7** or 9** is 'so gorgeous'. It's a nice bike but i wouldn't say its the best looking ever, there are many bits that could be better or have been done better on other machines. I must be missing something as usual as i see a bike, just a bike, covered in plastic at that.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder Dave.

You like Lilac, some of us like red plastic.

Because, Dave, it just simply is the most beautiful bike ever, and nothing they come up with now is even close.

Sod the expense, when you have to have one, you have to have one. When I get mine I'll find a comfy seat, raise the bars a fraction and slightly soften the rear end for my weight. And I won't give a damn what others may say-it'll be my bike and I would want to ride it in comfort. I don't go near tracks so don't realkly nead the track riding position. I just want it cos it's fackin gorgeous. I'd just have one in the living room if i could.

Indeed he duush Mish Moneypenny

Dave...like Mr S. Monkey says...it is simply a beautiful piece of design. It goes beyond being able to describe why...in fact even just trying to explain why would detract from its beauty...so I won't. It just is :hail:

Hey, look what we can see...

My six monthly eye tests will never seem the same again. As for the 749 / 999 series, I was never as taken with them as the 748 and 998 variants I owned as the design was and always will be an iconic one.

Few bikes, save the MV Agusta have come close and as a mark of it's status, it has been emulated by many others. I was told by an Italian friend of mine that had Tamburini not left Ducati and gone back to CRC, then a V-twin was originally destined to sit in the F4 frame, and that would have sold by the bucket load as the natural successor to the 916 series.

The Monster is a design classic, but it sits alongside the 916, as a worthy alternative to it. The 999 takes a little more getting used to, and from certain angles never quite evokes the same emotions from you, but it IS a better bike to ride. Jury has and IMHO always will be out on it's styling. I had mixed feelings about mine, but I'm destined for new territory now with the new beast on it's way (soon I hope), so it's all going to be a very different experience for me now after so many years on Ducati's faired offerings.

Styling is a very subjective issue with people, but when you look at the plethora of bland Japanese offerings over the last twenty years, it's only since Tamburini came along that the gulf in styling and design cues was highlighted so vividly

Oh my good god! I was given 2 hours this afternoon to play on a 748 :hail:

It was bloody brilliant! Quite a bit of my journey is through town...and this just felt right, maybe even a little better, for me at the moment anyway. Also, the insurance prices I'm being quoted for a 916 are just
