I'm runnin my 600 with 14/43. The rear sprocket is standard I believe and I have gone down 1 tooth on the front from 15 to 14.
Coupled to the keihins the acceleration is excellent, its comparible to my friends SS750ie, although it obviously runs out of steam quicker topping out at just over the ton

Hi Simon,
A few 900 owners have gone minus a tooth on the front, but found it a bit rev happy and reverted to standard or added a few teeth to the rear instead. General rule of thumb is that minus 1 tooth on front gives similar results to 3 more at the rear. Comparison with 600/750 gearing can be misleading as the engines are geared differently on both primary and gearbox, also the power delivery has more low down torque.
My chain & sprockets will be due for renewal soon, after almost 20K scottoiler assisted miles ;) I'm considering swapping to a 41T or 42T on the back, with the standard 15T on the front.

I'm running 15/41 and find that to be a good compromise between town riding and fast open road / track. 14/39 just restricted top end speed a little too much, on standard gearing i find it just a touch too lumpy at low speeds.

I run 15/39 and think it's about right, plenty of grunt (throttle wheelies even with my fat carcass...) and a decent top end too
